Moving to Sky Ultrafast

Looking at moving to fibre from super fast.

After speaking with Sky, and doing a little research, it looks like I'll have to have a cable ran inside near to where the router will plug in. 

Originally 10 years ago, Sky was installed and they ran the tv cables from the dish into the loft, left me to pull the cable downstairs through the chimney breast (less than 10 mins) then they carried on connecting up etc. 

What's the chances of this happening again with the fibre cable? Has anyone done similar recently?

Overhead feed and hoist required . It will more than likely follow the same route as the existing copper line but openreach may be open to alternatives on the day within the following parameters

10 metres from where the fibre enters the building and 3ft from the nearest electric wall socket but that is open to negotiation

@Matt28 the chance you will be allowed to install the fibre connection yourself is zero. As @cookiemonsteruk points out the ONT unit needs to be installed near a power socket and is likely to be near where your phone line enters the proprty. However the connection from the ONT to the Sky hub uses ethernet cable which you can run yourself and the hub does not need to be near the ONT. However you cannot mix the WAN traffic that uses the link from the ONT to the Hub with LAN traffic from your hub to wired devices.

The optical cable up to the ONT is part of the national Openreach network: civilians aren't allowed to touch it and that route is almost certainly outside the scope of a 'normal' installation.  Beyond the ONT it's up to you (but they are extremely unlikely to locate an ONT in a loft even if there's mains power available there)

1 stage install is the easiest and would normally be a 9 day lead time from date of order.  However the hoist could extend that to 2-4 weeks depending on the  openreach hoist team availbility so i assume thats a cherry picker.

The advice re the route of install would remain the same.  Make detailed on your preferred route and let openreach on the day . Hint tea and biscuits do help 😁👍

Essentially all I'm asking is, if it can be ran into the house at loft height (where the existing copper line comes in) then if I can feed the cable downstairs, which is within 10m distance, then they can carry on with the installation process.

Am I right in thinking there is only 3 Ethernet ports on the hub for ultrafast?

There's an integrated 4-port switch in the Sky Broadband Hub (and the new Max Hub), but one of those ports (#4) is designated as the WAN connection to the ONT so with FTTP only three are available for other use.

Strictly speaking they shouldn't let you handle the optical pigtail: whether they do so or not you'll find out on the day.

So I've got a date of 17th October for the Sky engineer to come into the property.

Is this also the date that Openreach will generally come aswell?
