Move from FTTC to SoGEA

Hi,

I received a phone call from Sky yesterday to say that with the analogue voice lines being switched off, they would be moving me to SoGEA from FTTC.  I already anticipated this happening given FTTP from Openreach is still unavailable in my area but supposedly due in the next year.

On the phone I was given an activation date of 26th March and told I wouldn't have to do anything, I was reassured that everything would be done remotely and at best I'd have about 2 minutes of downtime while they flick a switch.   Today, I've received a text message and email to say my "Sky Broadband Conversion Kit 1" has been dispatched and I'm confused,  what happened to me not having to do anything?   While the email itself doesn't say what this kit is,  a quick google search suggests its a Cat5e cable sent to customers upgrading from FTTC to Full Fibre. Why are they sending me this? Have they got mixed up and think I'm having FTTP installed despite it not being available in my area or do I need this?   Now I'm concerned they've screwed things up and will terminate my line entirely.

My broadband hub was only recently replaced to the SR203.

Has anyone else been switched to SoGEA and did you receive the same kit?

Re: Move from FTTC to SoGEA

@kargo Are you currently using the sky Talk Landline service, and if so where is that landline connected? It can be on the OR Master socket or connected to the back off the sky hub in the UK phone port. For both a SOGEA connection the line will be moved to delivery out of the sky Hub.

Getting all the cables supplied is just to cover all future connection types.

Re: Move from FTTC to SoGEA

Thanks so much for the reply.

Yes, I am currently on Sky Talk PAYG and currently the landline is connected to the micro filter and then the filter to the NTE5 socket.

Ah I think I'm understanding correctly.  So when the changeover happens, essentially I wouldn't need to use the micro filter at all anymore. It would be the hub line directly into the master socket  and then the phone would connect to the hub itself.

Re: Move from FTTC to SoGEA

@kargo That would be the object, it's all about covering the connections, and multiple types involved, the name FTTC is being dropped and replaced by SOGEA as the new name the delivery is still the same until FTTP hits everywhere if it ever does, and all about how the wiring is all done in the home once the copper gets there. Your example the old NTE5 Master Single port socket is a prime case and still having to seperate the two signals out with the ADSL filter so as NOT to cause voice issues and Broadband disconnect's when you pick up the landline for calling.

The ADSL filter arrangement should still work but your landline is for sure going to connect to the back off the sky Hub, when it all start's to work you will find the sky Hub, that 4th led far right just now is always unlit, the light is marked as voice and when it turns Green your hub is now working Digital for the Talk and delivered over the SOGEA software connection.

One major to consider, if you are using phone extension socket's currently, they will NO longer work, the Master socket is the End of the Line!

One cause of confusion is that in the absence of FTTP, the product labelled as Single order Generic Ethernet Access (SoGEA, a name which is completely meaningless outside the telecoms industry) is still physically  fibre to the cabinet, and absolutely not ethernet ; )
