Most sutible mesh network..

Hi so I'm not the most tech savvy when it comes to WiFi.. currently we're on super fast and get around 30 mb/s .. sadly that's the best which we can get in this area 🤦‍♂️ so the kids upstairs are constantly moaning about poor connection when playing with their friends online. Had the sky engineers out but not still nothing. Tried WiFi extender but was still bad. Now we're looking at a mesh network with a budget of around £200. We have the sky router SR203. Just wondering if anyone with some expertise and help. Not sure if a tri-band or WiFi 6 mesh is best suited for our current set up or maybe buy a better router. Any help would be great.

@V-P

All asus rt ax wifi 6 routers will connect either with a suitable vdsl modem removing the need for the sky hub or as an access point and mesh etherneted to the sky hub

I would suggest if you are using them as plain access point to look at the asus rt ax55u or asus rt ax56u

Could you also post your hub stats just to make sure you are getting the right speed

@V-P couple of things for you to consider. First although a wifi 6 or 6e system will help future proof your system to an extent (wifi 7 is in development) they still can only deliver the limited external bandwidth you have you can save money by buying a lower spec Wifi 5 system. Also check which of your devices support wifi 6 etc.

A system with multiple satellites units can be more stable which is as important as outright speed especially for gaming and streaming video. Few apps and devices can use let alone need speeds over 100Mb/s except for speeding up downloads.

Re: Most sutible mesh network..

Thanks for the reply. We're getting WiFi cameras fitted next weekend aswell so I think coverage / stability is the most important for us right now. I've read a lot of different forums but it's like a foreign language trying to make sense of it all 😆🤦‍♂️

@V-P a basic mesh system like my own Deco M4 system is easy to set up, the most complicated thing is turning off the Sky hub's wifi. The units are plug and play and like most of these systems are controlled by an app but if you get stuck TP-Link have an excellent website with answers to most questions. I have found Netgear Orbi system very good in the past

If you are getting a camera system check whether it can only connect only to the 2.4GHz Wifi band as many do.  With Sky's hub you can split the two Wifi bands to get a dedicated 2.4GHz SSID for the cameras but most Mesh systems dont support that solution but there is a simple hack. In the mesh systems app disable the 5GHz band connect the cameras then re-enable the band and they should remain connected.

Re: Most sutible mesh network..

So should I buy something similar to the m4 ( I was originally looking at the m9 plus )  and disable the sky router WiFi like mentioned above or do you think a better router ( ASUS ) and buy a access point would be best.?

@V-P almost impossible to advise as only you know your use case. Using the Sky hub simplifies support and set up, using a third party router is more complex to set up but could be more flexible. Depends on whether you will want a higher speed system when full fibre reaches your road. Etc etc

Re: Most sutible mesh network..

Thanks for the input. I think I'll go with the m9 plus. Finally, in order to get it working do I plug an Ethernet from

one of the nodes into the router and disable WiFi ?

@V-P basically yes but read this page for how to set the Deco unit to operate in Access Point mode rather than the default router mode  https://www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/1842/

@V-P

Your stats show a high noise margin which suggests there is room for extra speed if you upgraded your package just an FYI.

Regarding the problem with your kids gaming, the best option for that would likely be powerline if you havent already tried that?

Re: Most sutible mesh network..

I'm pretty sure we're in the best broadband package for this area unless I'm mistaken. No I've not tried the powerlink, was going to get that originally but with getting wireless CCTV thought it would be best to kill two birds with one stone so to speak by getting the mash. Thanks for the help

@V-P

I'd be very suprised if that was the highest speed you could get.
