KiraOne IR Over IP Bridge

Hi Everyone

If this has been answered elsewhere could someone please post the link(s).  Prior to the servers being closed down in November 2023 I had a Sling Box/Player.  The ability to watch your own TV/Set Top Box anywhere there’s an internet connection always intrigued me since I first read about it in What Satellite.  I have however found an alternative (to Sling Box) that works as well if not better.  Unlike Sling Box this needs port forwarding to be activated.  It also needs a separate means of controlling the Set Top Box.  This second part is achieved using a BroardLink Mini and app.  This is Cloud based and doesn’t need port forwarding.  I have a ddns.net Hostname with No-IP so I don’t need to account for my public IP address changing.  I can (almost) always reach the video encoder part of the set up (and the IR blaster).

The problem is that I would rather use an actual remote control over an app on a phone.  To this end a bought a KiraOne receiver/transmitter combo.  KiraOne receives an Infrared signal at one module; sends it to a target module which controls the relevant equipment using an IR blaster.  This works perfectly when both are on the same LAN.  However the two ports on the router (Sky Router SR203 (the black one)) that need to be forwarded to get the KiraOne to function remotely show as not open when using a port checker.  One is the Discovery Port 30303 UDP.  Everything I’ve read says this is a registered port and should open.  UPnP on the router is enabled.  The other is port 65432 UDP.  This is the IR data port.  I have read that when forwarding a dynamic port you should specify a range not an individual port.  But this makes the router less secure.  I have also read that the SR203 doesn’t accommodate Infra-Red data.

Am I trying to do something with the SR203 that it won’t do i.e. forward IR data?  Should I specify a range of dynamic ports?  If so what should the range be?  Am I missing something with port 30303?  Should I give up on using a physical remote control and persevere with the phone app?

I have probably missed some relevant detail but since the video encoder works fine from anywhere and I followed the same process to set up port forwarding for the KiraOne I assume the problem isn’t entirely down to me.  Thanks in anticipation.
