Is there a reliable Sky speed test?

I remember from other providers (BT I think it was) they didn't like using Ookla as a measurement of speed. They had their own URL that I was to use. Couldn't find such a thing with Sky.

I'm fairly sure I'll be moving from Sky as the amount of WiFi dropout is ridiculous. The app is forever telling me there's a WiFi issue.

I've ran an Ookla test on a WIRED connection. I'm paying for a 900mb connection.

I'm on about day 3 since activation & my WIRED results have been anything from 100mb to around this speed in the image.

FWIW the cabling running from the Sky Max Hub to my PC is Cat6.

Oh and as it says the image wont be visible initially because they have to be moderated first then if anyone sees this before it's moderated then it shows 378mb, so not even close to 900mb.

@MightyMouse while Ookla is reliable it is measuring the speed st the device which if its connected by WiFi is likely to be the WiFi speed at the pointbtge device is positioned. Sky check the broadbsnd spedd to your hub which is guaranteed to be between 600 to 900Mb/s the results oare in the service checker in the My Sky app there is jo reason to think those rexults are not accurate.

WiFi spedds depend on the layout of your home and how it is built. 378Mb/s is fast enough for almosteverything a domestic connection is used for only downloads might be faster.

IMHO... that speed is poor for a wired connection.  I've just run a speed test on my Apple TV 4K which is wired to an Asus XT9 node, which itself is wirelessly connected to the main XT9 in the hallway and it recorded  914 download/ 922 upload, with a ping of 5ms.

While it is true that you would probably not notice any issues with your real world broadband usage, you will need to follow up with Sky to find out how this speed can be improved.

For speed tests, I use the speed test within my router, which uses Ookla but it records 916/610 which is slower on the upload than my Apple TV 🤔

Best of luck

Re: Is there a reliable Sky speed test?

Thing is I'm not talking about a WiFi connection with this. My PC is wired.

I agree, almost 400mb is more than probably 99% of people 'need' but if I'm paying for 900mb then I expect to get somewhere near it.

When I was on 300 with the previous provider I got very close to it with Ookla. I expect the same with Sky. If that doesn't happen then I may as well not be paying for 900mb.

@MightyMouse sorry I missed you were using a wired connection. Any Ethernet connection should carryy the available speed delivered to yiur hub and not being used by other devices on your network. Assuming nothing else is using significant bandwidth you should see get up to 900Mb/s.

The speed each FTTP connection gets is not something Sky can control. Assuming you have an Openreach line you are connected to a local ditribution point that serves up to 30 lines sharing a 2.48Gb/s downstream connection. Pretty obviously not everone can get 900Mb/s at the sametime but statistically this works but speeds can drop at peak times. It all depends what your neighbours are doing at the time. Sky run a test daily which is accurate but if the test is run at a quiet time say 9am  it will report 900Mb/s while at 9pm speeds maybe different.

If Sky test show speeds under 600Mb/s for 3 days in a row then they will normally release you from contract if you complain. Howevervtgat is pretty pointless unless you have access to another network as switching to any other isp using the same line will get the same results.

Re: Is there a reliable Sky speed test?

Are you saying that if my neighbour(s) are also on Sky then what they do impacts what I receive?

I've just aran another test on the wired connection & it's around the same speed reported earlier in this thread. The MySky app says I'm getting 900mb to the hub though. Right this second the only thing really using the internet is my PC. There's other things connected of course - various security cameras (but they're motion detection & they're not flagging any activity right now), my phone (but I'm not touching it & it's not actively downloading anything), the nvidia shield (but it's not being used). The only other member of the house is out so it's just me & I'm still not hitting 900 or even half that.

At 10am on a Sunday.

Same happened at almost midnight on Saturday which was the last time I ran a test.

Presuming the MySky app shows all of its recent history is around that 900Mbps figure then the issue is somewhere from the ethernet port in the hub and the PCs internals.

Do use the Speedtest app from the Windows store as browsers can affect the test.

Are you using any switches between the hub and the PC or is it wired direct to the hub?

If the speed is still down then first try replacing the ethernet cable with a new cat5e or cat6 cable in a different hub port.
