Internet with 2 service providers

Hello,

I joined Talktalk 2 days ago and they have assured me my internet is live with them. I haven't had chance to check as they forget to send the router so still waiting to see.

I am still getting my Sky internet. I presumed this should have been stopped when Talktalk went live.

Is it possible to have 2 at the same time? Very confused!

Thanks.

Do you mean you signed up to Talktalk 2 days ago or you were told your line had been changed over to them ?

.

It's not possible for two ISPs to use the same circuit (copper or optical)

Re: Internet with 2 service providers

Hi thanks for your replies. Talktalk have said the service went live 2 days ago (I signed up weeks ago). As I say Sky is still working so very confused.

I did get a new phone number (as I didn't know the original one when signing up to Talktalk). Could that be the reason?

If you visit a 'what is my IP address' website, which ISP does that report?

Re: Internet with 2 service providers

Hi, it says Opal which I looked up might be Talktalk? No idea how my Sky router is working then!

Appreciate everyone's help by the way.

Opal Telecom is a legacy predecessor of TalkTalk.

Presumably you have FTTP rather than FTTC: an optical connection is more likely to be tolerant of different router hardware.

Re: Internet with 2 service providers

I have no idea but thanks for your help.

I will contact Sky to see if they need to stop anything.

Presumably I will be billed extra as I have used my old router for the last few days.

That shouldn't be the case: billing is for the broadband service, not the hardware.  As far as Sky is concerned their billing ceased when TalkTalk took over the circuit.
