I have just got sky stream and have the maximum broadband available however my son who games upstairs says his games dont run properly now as if the stream is taking up all the band width surely there should be enough

Stream uses around 25Mbs at most (for UHD content).  That may or may not be a high proportion of what's arriving at your particular address.

For gaming the issue is likely to be WiFi coverage rather than broadband speed.
