Full fibre and mobile

Why do Sky not recommend full fibre if you have poor moblle reception. Surely the Wi-Fi calling will be more stable and reliable if full fibre is used.

Without local mains power there's only WiFi if the property has a reasonably substantial battery to keep both the ONT and the ISP router going for the duration of the outage (plus, of course, the external  fibre circuit hasn't had a tree branch through it ; )

@Wiltshire+lad Do you have full Fibre to start with, and Wi-Fi calling can be very mobile network dependant as such until you try it it may/mat not work as expected! Wi-fi calling works equally well over fttc copper connection, so does not require fttp as a primary source!

Re: Full fibre and mobile

No, I do not have full fibre at the moment and I do have to rely on Wi-Fi calling on the ee network since my mobile signal is very poor due to a hill in the way. In one of their blurbs, Sky say full fibre is not recommended with a weak mobile signal which surprised me. So far I have not been able to find out why. I will upgrade to full fibre if I  an be sure to get a mobile connection.

It's a stipulation by Ofcom: ISPs are obliged to caution potential customers.

The concern is that FTTP (carried on a hair-thin strand of glass) cannot bring an electrical current into a property to power a basic telephone handset in the event of a domestic power cut.

This means that voice calls depend on mobile coverage, and Ofcom is concerned about the potential impact on 'vulnerable' users if there's little or no mobile signal at the address.

Re: Full fibre and mobile

@Wiltshire+lad Although i am on sky mobile, with my Samsung A54 i can go to airplane mode, which switches off all mobile and still use wi-fi calling, Just did so 10 mins ago and all working fine call to my sister for a good 5 mins, Fttp or fttc should not make any difference to wi-fi calling hardly any resources used on a call!

As part of the Full Fibre connection and using a landline connected, then phone is now digital, no Internet no Landline, being on a copper line, then you can still have the old PSTN style connection and therefore keep a landline going, all to do with Emergency services! Belts and braces until OR pulls the plug which is anytime in the future!

Re: Full fibre and mobile

If you already have Sky Talk then this number will transfer to your fibre connection, your land line plugs into the router instead of the wall socket. The issue is if you have a power cut your router and ONT wil lose power. This means you won't be able to make land line calls.

If you dont have or use a landline then not an issue, you get a Sky Talk number with any new fibre connections, if you dont already have Sky Talk, this is at zero line rental cost, you only get charged for calls you make.

If this is an issue for you then you can purchase a small UPS, this will be able to power your ONT and Router for a few hours during any power outage. These can be found at Amazon or computer retailers like Currys or an independent shop.

During the ordering process you have to tick a box to acknowlege this limitation.

Re: Full fibre and mobile

Thanks for that.
However, am I missing something?  If there is a power cut, I know the landline won't work, but I assume Wi-Fi will still be available on the full fibre network and my mobile will be able to make calls.
I am beginning to wonder if I have got this all wrong. Is Wi-Fi provided by the full fibre or is it only for streaming?
