Fibre cable

Sounds like a foolish question but I will explain later.

Do I need an actual physical cable runnining into my house to get Sky Fire Max ?

@Confusedbytech

All of the different broadband types offered by Sky Broadband require a bearer cable: either fibre-optic or copper.

Despite its heritage, Sky is not and never has been a satellite ISP.

Yes, otherwise you won't have anything to connect to.  Sky only provides either a copper based or fibre line type connection.

PS your duplicate thread created today has been removed as you asked the same question just over a week ago, the reply remains the same as before.

Re: Fibre cable

Thank you for answering .

Just to re cap the Sky 'Fiber Max' product could indeed just be coming into a building via an ancient BT copper wire but is still sold as 'Fibremax' ??

Re: Fibre cable

@Confusedbytech Here is the sky help below explaining the Fibre, package names etc can be whatever, dont see the one you mention, Part Fibre or Full Fibre are the basic definitions. And from that top link you will find

Sky Fibre Max Part Fibre FTTC as in here linked very bottom!

@Confusedbytech

I'm not aware that 'Fibre Max' is a current product name.  Are you perhaps thinking of 'WiFi Max'?

Ofcom now expects ISPs to refer to 'part fibre' (FTTC) and 'full fibre' (FTTP) broadband to avoid such confusion.

Fibre Max was an FTTC product launched ten years ago, so that would arrive at the subscription address over a copper phone pair.

Re: Fibre cable

@TimmyBGood It is on the sky List as Fibre Max, could be an ancient name, just so hard to keep up with all but i never heard off it either!

Old FTTC as far as i can see! And from 10 Years ago seen your reply!

Re: Fibre cable

Hello Again

I just went on my Sky account and I can confirm it is called 'Sky Fibre Max' and is averaging 60.6 Mb/s , less half the UK average .

I know for a fact that my BT copper line comes from a 'Green box' many hundreds of Metres from my house .

Based on that I think Sky using the words 'Sky Fibre Max' for hat is coming into my house is a misnomer .

And yes , I have been with Sky longer than I can remember . If the name of the product has changed why has it not been changed on my profile ?

Re: Fibre cable

To Be Honest i do not think i am getting the best value from Sky.

Vareity pack    £45.50

HD                       £14

Sky fibre max  £ 36.75

Go Extra             £0

Sky WiFi            £ 0

Sky talkline      £ 18.99

Sky talk Evening  £ 8.00

The landline is almost never used but I guess can not be disconnected as everything 'Sky' travels through it

£123 is this months bill for what is essentially 60.6 Mbps and a basic Sky package.

Seems a bit excessive

Re: Fibre cable

@Confusedbytech It just seems to be the sky way, once you sign up get your applied package then the name just sticks on the profile and yours happens to be call the Fibre Max, basically a partial Fibre FTTC delivered over copper and in your case Maximum 80/20 as a 80Mb/s down to a 20Mb/s up, so getting the approx 60Mb/s you have would appear that you are somewhere around the 300M mark from your Green street cabinet, my old copper was 600-800M depending on what ref was used and the profile was 40/10 and doable as 99% off the time worked at that speed!

It's all generational naming wise fact is went through ADSL, VDSL2, G.Fast and now SOGEA as BTW naming for the supply.... Link below if you want to take a look at yours just use all the Address details, and sample picture once cleared for general viewing so you can see my own home values!

Re: Fibre cable

@Confusedbytech From your sample and posted....

Vareity pack    £45.50

HD                       £14

TV Side off your package the above two entries....

Sky fibre max  £ 36.75

This one is your broadband supplied by sky

Go Extra             £0

Sky WiFi            £ 0

Sky talkline      £ 18.99

This one not sure about so going to go find an old bill and get back to you on it!

Edit:- When i look back on all the old bills, only reference i see to this is Skytalk Line Rental and was removed as a payment

Sept 2020 as i thought no longer a Chargeable item sky Wise, but there are some rules about it all and that is what i am not sure off so you need to check it out, package wise you were like for like only difference i had the sky Talk Anytime Extra for calls, as my Father was in his early 80's and always on the phone checking up on him so to speak!

Sky talk Evening  £ 8.00

Landline package  so you get what is agreed...

That's actually slightly above average speed for FTTC: the national average for broadband overall is being driven up by the rollout of FTTP.

I know for a fact that my BT copper line comes from a 'Green box' many hundreds of Metres from my house .

Yes, hence 'Fibre To The Cabinet', also known as 'Part Fibre' and completely dependent on copper line distance.  The 'Max' name is because back when it was introduced the technology could be significantly faster than ADSL.

That £18.99 is line rental and goes back to  when customers who weren't on Sky's phone network had to have their phone connected on BT's network and had to pay line rental on top of the broadband price.

@Confusedbytech You will probably be able to reduce your cost by recontracting the TV and broadband.

Re: Fibre cable

@simon194 Thanks for clearing up the Line Rental one, just could not remember or either not the specific reason to why charge applied or not if a Sky/BT type issue at the Exchange level or Equipment etc!

Re: Fibre cable

Thanks for the graph , thats pretty accurate speed/distance to the 'green box' up the road.

Not sure how to go forward now , we almost never use the landline and there is a (installed by Virgin) fibre cable right outside the front of my house .

I would like to reduce my bill if im honest , seems a lot of money for the use it gets in my houshold . not intrested in sports/football etc .

Any ideas folks. ?
