Re: FTTP install in flat - can cable be run along ceiling?
@Daveyboy1234 Sky Q if you are using the wireless wi-fi connection between the Q box and the sky hub, I would never do that personally and look to network the Q box, but everyone is different, you are now talking taking the hub out to the hall and hopefully that does not affect the q wireless wi-fi if you are indeed using, so you potentially are opening a can off worms, you may as well if you have sky mini attached also say now!
Advice as well do not even think about Sky Max as a hub if you are happy with the black SR203 version...

Re: FTTP install in flat - can cable be run along ceiling?
Yeah have sky q connected wirelessly but not concerned at all with connection on that as also have a sky mini for the bedroom and never had any issues with that on a 50mb internet connection. My hallway is right next to living room so wouldn't be moving far anyway. As I say, just the actual install of the ONT which I was more concerned about but hopefully as others have said they will have a way to sort it somehow where I need it.
imagine this must be an issue for lots of people as most have routers set up near to where telephone line comes in but with this new full fibre connection, it's not necessarily coming into same area as where the phone came in so sure lots of people will probably have moved routers. Can't see that everyone is running meters of Ethernet cable all over (although I get some will)

Yeah I currently just have the normal black sky router. Is the max bad then? Wasn't intending to get that one but thought that was meant to be an upgrade?

Re: FTTP install in flat - can cable be run along ceiling?
@Daveyboy1234 Getting a really bad rap just now, and is / was not Q Mesh designed but some sort of FW to patch it and you have to use a mobile to set it duh!, reported as poor in wireless wi-fi performance, never used it always been a SR203 Broadband Hub Upright Black since it came out 2019, good reliable dependable hub, and Newer is not always better especially if no wi-fi 6 equiment to use, so why introduce the non needed....

Re: FTTP install in flat - can cable be run along ceiling?
@Daveyboy1234 Position of the ONT is not important, i got OR to put up in my dormier, and then i run the Ethernet cable to where i wanted the routers to be so no issues, was working great, but the wife god bless her likes moving the furniture about i dont want it there now, so move it, unfortunatly the cables do not reach so got to redo it all, but running in Asus AI wireless backhaul at present, just a slight speed hit until i get the units all wired again.! Wont get caught the second time because you can be sure the furniture move will happen again....

Re: FTTP install in flat - can cable be run along ceiling?
Just so you are aware, a cat 5e or cat 6 ethernet cable between the ONT and the router could theoretically be up to 100m, so if there is somewhere convenient to put the cable, running it into the living room is no problem.

Re: FTTP install in flat - can cable be run along ceiling?
Thanks again all, yes I understand that running an Ethernet cable could work but ideally I don't want any extra cables. That's why I want the ONT in a position where I can also have the router so I don't have cables along the floor etc. ideally wanted it like I have it now and have it all tidy in the living room but know that's not really an option as completely understand installer is not likely to want to try and run across different rooms and I would have to run Ethernet cables from hallway to living room if I left just the router in living room which I don't want to do.
really wishing I hadn't bothered as my 50mb superfast connection is fine and stable and seems like it could be a bit of a faff to sort it all but just wanted to future proof really as know eventually copper FTTC broadband will eventually go or they will stop selling due to me being in a fibre enabled building so thought best to just get it done and out the way.
so guess really I just need to wait and see what engineer says when they come and see what they recommend and go from there.

Re: FTTP install in flat - can cable be run along ceiling?
Just a quick update.
install occurred on Monday and went well. A couple of issues originally as they put box in wrong place and realised after that the cable would then not be long enough so had to move the box but got there in the end.
they ran the cable in the end around the top of the wall and then drilled another small hole into living room to drop the fibre cable through - they were happy to do so to ensure the box was installed in preferred location.
so all connected and sorted.
Just wondered though on speed connection if this will improve. I opted for the gigafast fibre which is rated at 900mbps. But my connection (as confirmed by mysky app) is fluctuating daily between 670 and 695 Mbps. Nowhere near the 900Mbps. However the upload speed is showing as 895Mbps so that's actually higher than my download connection.

Re: FTTP install in flat - can cable be run along ceiling?
@Daveyboy1234 Great it all went well, you are one off the very 1st, actually think you are it No1 connection wise and on the Forum with that and as before there is really NO user experience, so very hard to say what you will get what you will see, below is a speed test link, but way better run on a laptop/pc connected on the Ethernet port of your sky hub, Wi-Fi wireless connection can just be so up/down even at the best, have seen on my FF500 sky connection through OR when busy network speed sustained at 200Mb/s, but mostly up near the 500 when busy times are not! Always good to have a base to compare against!

Re: FTTP install in flat - can cable be run along ceiling?
@Daveyboy1234 If you get time, would you care to list how/what/when type just for all the possible questions that will go.
1. The ONT that City Fibre fitted, and ie lights you see in your normal operation.
2. Did the install involve changing out you sky hub, or you just got to keep all that you had, and just Ethernet connected back from the hub to your new installed ONT.
3. All off the sky Q / Mini's hang in there and work well, that's a time will tell so no rush on that one!
👍

Re: FTTP install in flat - can cable be run along ceiling?
1. Not sure what the model is etc but looking online appears to be the Calix Gigapoint GP1100 (a grey ONT with four leds-Has power, broadband, service and Ethernet leds.)
also, it was cityfibre that did the installation and not sky engineers.
2. No new routers or anything. I had the SR203 already and still have that. All cityfibre did was run the cable from my front door along the wall and into living room. ONT was then installed to wall in living room. I then had already bought a 5m cat5e Ethernet cable to run from the ONT to the router so they plugged that in and plugged the ONT into power. That was about it.
3. so far so good with sky q. Not watched as much on the mini as rarely watch on that device but did a few tests and after reconnecting via WPS button on router (lost its connection to router/sky q box) after installation, it seems to be working and connecting fine again.
All in all seems ok. I did notice some really slow wifi though initially and realised that Sky shield had switched back on again when I transferred over to new product. I disabled this and wifi speed seems ok again now so if anyone has any issues with slower or unsteady wifi speeds then this could be the problem (Xbox still seems quite slow at about 200Mbps over WiFi but reading through articles online, it seems this is quite common and more an issue with Xbox).
As I say, the connection to Sky seems to be just under 700Mbps and not the 900 that I should be getting. Can't test over Ethernet only WiFi but I'm going by skys actual connection speed. WiFi speeds are between 550 and 600 which I understand is about the max over WiFi (apart from the Xbox as noted above)

Re: FTTP install in flat - can cable be run along ceiling?
This is a picture of the sky network test from mysky app. As you can see currently still only connecting at 680 instead of 900+ so not sure why that would be as seems a small increase over the 500Mbps package if I never end up getting the 900 speeds.

Re: FTTP install in flat - can cable be run along ceiling?
@Daveyboy1234 You have just fully understood the SR203 Wi-Fi5 speed limit, and about 600Mb/s and that is at a push will be topped out speed wise on a wireless Wi-Fi connection, the reported speed that sky see, service checker good to see the whole 30 day gambit, but it is only once a day, can be found out looking at the hub log, TR069 3 entries when it happens time really never varies so if in a CF busy time do expect to be that little bit lower and that is what sky will report, Download is always far more busier than the Upload that's why most do the split, ie mine FF500/70,
And the hub is set 549 000 70 000 so does peak a little over the 500 at times.....

Re: FTTP install in flat - can cable be run along ceiling?
@Daveyboy1234 Login to your hub 192.168.0.1 and the security log going to ask you for the user/password so you know look for the TR069 entry. Time is the important part, Ethernet is the really only way to prove as you got the wifi speed down pat...
