Ethernet port speed
Hello - I have sky WiFi 150mb, which works well over WiFi. I have Ethernet ports around my house however and I'm only getting up to 90mb (according to the Netflix speed app). I've tried connecting a laptop directly to my router but this still only gets between 80-90. I have cat 5e Ethernet cables which should be fast enough. Is there anything in need to be doing differently?
thank you!

Re: Ethernet port speed
Check the settings of the network interface adaptor in your laptop - it could be set to 100 Mbps instead of 1000 Mbps.

Re: Ethernet port speed
Thank you! I will check on my laptop, but will that influence the other devices connected via Ethernet? I have my main sky q box and a sky q mini, both of which are showing less than 90mb speed via Ethernet, which is very similar to when connecting a laptop directly to the router

Not sure. Someone with better knowledge than me will soon reply, I suspect!

Re: Ethernet port speed
@Sam180 In general, streaming type devices don't require massive amounts of bandwidth, even a uhd video stream is typically 25-30Mb/s max,
so it's common for tv's / set top boxes Ethernet ports to be 10/100 max.
PC's or laptops normally have better specifications, so you should be getting closer to 140Mb/s over a wired connection from the likes of fast or Ookla.

Re: Ethernet port speed
@Sam180 if you ethernet cabelling has been in place for some years it is possible it doesn't support gigabit speeds which requires a minimum of Cat 5e cabelling with all 4 pairs connected. In practice 90Mb/s is ample for most purposes as few apps can use much over 100Mb/s anyway. The one huge benefit of ethernet is it is far more stable than wifi.

Re: Ethernet port speed
I would also log into your router and check the ethernet ports are set to Gigabit and not Fast Ethernet.

Re: Ethernet port speed
Thanks both - it's a new build house so I'm expecting the Ethernet cables through the walls to support over 100mb. I've also checked the settings on the router and it's set to gigafast 😞
agreed that 90mb is ample, I'm just wanting to get the maximum I can through the cables if I'm paying for 150mb!

Re: Ethernet port speed
Can you send a screenshot of your ethernet status in Windows when you connect your laptop via ethernet?
