I have been using the Allavsoft downloader to download YouTube videos for church services for my mother in law, who is now too old to attend church. Normally I wouldn't like to do this for YouTube in general, but given they are put up by the local church, and it's the only way my mother-in-law can do this (she hasn't got wifi, and can barely use a smartphone), I figured it should be OK.
All worked well up to a couple of weeks ago, when it started doing this.
(1) Starts the download of the video part (1.58 Gb).
(2) Download speed very slow and variable (but the WiFi is about 136 Mbps on SpeedTest).
(3) Gets about 1/3 of the way through, then abruptly switches to downloading the audio (about 94 Mb)
(4) At end reports successful download of 94 Mb but all you get is the audio, and no video.
I was running this on an iMac. Allavsoft support sent me a Windows version to try on my Windows laptop, and it behaved in exactly the same way as above and failed as well. (So, nothing to do with the computer).
Tried it out on other networks, and it was fine.
Eventually found a Heath-Robinson solution by tethering the mac to my android phone hotspot when the phone was connected to the WiFi.
It then worked perfectly, and the download speeds were much faster with the phone as a bridge, than with direct to router wifi connection.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this odd behaviour?
Thanks
