Download speeds slower than sky hub status
Hi,
I have always had consistent speeds but been getting consistently lower speeds for the last three weeks. The sky app tested the line and suggested getting an engineer. He arrived and checked the line and said a cap had been placed on it which he removed, retested and said I was now able to get 80Mbps down and 20Mbps up.
When I run a speed test (wired and wireless) I am getting 54Mbps down. This is much slower than the speeds shown in the sky hub Router Statistics
Does anyone know why the speeds are different?
Thanks

Re: Download speeds slower than sky hub status
@matt10182 there are a couple ofthings you need to take into account first roughly 8% of bandwidth is lost to unavoidable network overheads required to deliver data so you 80Mb/s sync equals roughly 73Mb/s max at a device connected by a fast network link like an Ethernet cable if no other devices is using bandwidth
However wifi connections to devices often run slower so restrict the speed a test will return. Wifi speed is affected by the layout and type of construction as solid objects like walls reduce signal strength.

Re: Download speeds slower than sky hub status
Hi,
Thanks for responding. I was always getting around 73Mb/s. For most of april this dropped to 61Mb/s and now it is 53Mb/s. If the engineer said everything is fine then why are my speeds constantly lower than he said they should be and what they were previously? Even the sky speed test app is saying there is a problem.

Re: Download speeds slower than sky hub status
@matt10182 by far the modt likely explanation is that the wifi conditions have changed perhaps due to interference or simply by being in a slightly different position in a room. You can measure the wifi speed from your device to the hub by using the app WiFi Sweetspots.

Re: Download speeds slower than sky hub status
I'm not running the test over wifi, its over a wired connection.

Re: Download speeds slower than sky hub status
@matt10182 it would of helped if you had said that earlier. Assuming the connection is a direct ethernet cable (not via powerline adapters etc which can restrict throughput ) AND nothing else is using data which cannot be assumed as many devices update when not in active use you have a mystery as your hub is clearly connected ay 80Mb/s.
Sky have no mechanism of restricting througput and contention issues are vanishingly unlikely on VDSL services at this time of day.
