Does Sky still only use Option 61? Or is there support for PPPOE in the UK now?

Hi all,

I have just taken out Sky broadband, we have FTTP and an ONT point from openreach in the property. Does Sky still only use option 61? Or is there a chance i will be able to use a TP Link Deco mesh as the router and disconnect the sky one completely? Ive seen some recent reddit posts saying newer routers now support PPPOE? Is this true?

@WxBevan Have a read link below, although i use Asus NO option 61 in use whatsoever! Search XT8 and you will see. PPPoE is not the primary method to setup the Router connection!

Woohoo! So it looks like with the ONT box, sky no longer uses option 61, as the ONT box authenticates, not the router. So it will work with dynamic IP set (not option 61 or PPPOE) and you can use a custom box.

Note that we've been informed this doesn't cover the whole of the Openreach network (although it should work for the vast majority of households)

I can imagine it is more reliable in the households that do have the specific Openreach ONT FTTP point. If there was an easy way to compare cases i reckon this would be the common denominator! Thank you all for your time and comments!

Apparently it's dependent on upstream equipment rather than the ONT.
