Digging up drive

I was due an installation today after moving home. We have only been in a week and the guy who came out realised it wasn't as straightforward as he thought and said someone would have to come out to dig up the drive. Someone was meant to be in touch by the end of the day with a date but I also want to know how much do they dig up and do they put the drive way back to how it was before?

A thin strip wide enough to drop in a plastic pipe, from the edge of the plot to an external wall of the building.

and do they put the drive way back to how it was before?

As far as possible, yes.  Our brick pavers don't look any different, but a tarmac drive would have a patched strip.
