Hi
My Son has just moved into a flat & needs broadband as he's using his phone data & it's costing quite a lot.
The flat has a phone line, I've not tested it yet, been told it works by the landlord, I've a friend who has an old phone I can test it with.
I thought I would be able to sign up for a deal, a router would be sent out, connect it to the phone line and that would be it, without the need for an engineer visit.
Sadly, this doesn't appear to be an option.
Can someone advise what the engineer would be doing, as any alterations/drilling, need to be approved by the landlord beforehand.
Thanks
Gareth

Thanks for all the help guys.
He needs broadband for work, Netflix & gaming so what would be the best minimum?
Hard to say netflix uhd with dolby can take 30-35 Mbps. Also does he download a lot of games. Personally ihave 100 Mbps with netflix uhd dolby vision and any games have been downloaded overnight . Start at 100-150 Mbps he can always upgrade

Re: Broadband installation via existing phone line
If the phone line still worked then the previous tenant or the landlord haven't cancelled the previous broadband subscription which will need doing first.

Re: Broadband installation via existing phone line
I'm not aware of any previous broadband contracts for the flat, just told there was a connection there, I'm assuming just meant there was a working phone line.
Would the engineer have to make much alterations/do much drilling etc?

Re: Broadband installation via existing phone line
We'd need to see the two lines below the table in order to know if there's going to be an FTTP installation.
BT Halo 3+ Ultrafast FTTP (500Mbs), BT Smart Hub 2

Re: Broadband installation via existing phone line
Full fibre with an overhead feed from telephone pole to house . A new fibre cable will be installed on the day of activation. Any copper line or lack there of is immaterial as the phone plugs into the sky roouter

Re: Broadband installation via existing phone line
It's one of four upstairs flats within that address.
Why can't we just plug a router into the existing phone line?
This is how my Fathers broadband still operates.
As you can tell, I'm not well versed in this stuff...lol.
Is it much work for the engineer? How much of a mess will be made? As it has to be run past the landlord...

Re: Broadband installation via existing phone line
It looks like every flat takes its fibre directly from the telephone pole so theres no central comms room. For example i am in one of 25 flats which are multiple dwelling units and landlord permission was required but it appears for you you would not need o inform them 👍

Re: Broadband installation via existing phone line
@BURKEY54 What was previous was ok, what is now is NOT ok, Fibre only so has to be upgraded, at the end off the day it is an asset to the landlord, free of charge to them, but you have to deal with it all.!
