Bandwidth up and down

I bought Sky Broadband Ultrafast Plus as I was told that fibre would be subtantially faster, however the bandwidth keeps going up and down through the day, which is very Frustrating. At times we have £100Mbps+ and then at other times have 3Mbps coming through, it was better before we installed fibre. Can anyone help with advice on what to do or is it just the network?

Unfortunately FTTP has a contention ratio of up to 1:32 so the 2.4Gbps available at the splitter is being shared between up to 32 end-user connections. If you get a lot of downloads going on at the same time this bandwidth can quickly get used up slowing everyone down.

I don't know exatly what Openreach are planning for rolling out XGS-GPON which has a higher bandwidth, up to 10Gbps, but it's where quite a lot of altnets have the advantage because they are rolling out XGS-GPON networks and some have an uncontended service so you don't get the variable speed issues.
