Adding a NAS, how should I set it up?

Hi

Im about to purchase a NAS and want some guidance on how I should set this up, any additional equipment required and any changes that need to be made to the Sky box.

My current understanding is I would need a switch to pass through the connection to the sky box and the NAS can then be connected on another port on the switch. However I just want to check this makes sense and if the Sky Box or home wifi could be blocked due to the introduction of the switch.

I also want to be sure that with this configuration, I will be able to see the NAS on the wifi network, read and write to it.

Thanks!

@MarkovichJames  You shouldn't need any additional equipment other than your Nas box and internal drives, most decent Nas providers allow cloud setup if you want external access.

Ordinarily a NAS is used on your internal network.

If you have either a spare ethernet port on the broadband hub or a network switch anyone on you home network will see the Nas setup, however this also depends on permissions for other users to access it, your NAS provider should have all relave t documentation normally online.

I use QNap which has a secure cloud portal if you want external access while away from home.

Thanks

If I set this NAS up in line with the Sky router, any idea what transfer speeds im likely to achieve?

Would getting a switch make any difference?

@MarkovichJames  Ethernet to ethernet should be up to 1gbps (asuming ethernet ports & cable are at least 1gbps), this will depend on any existing traffic on the network.
