800mb connection but Teams video calls keep freezing

Hi,

 

I have had the superfast fibre, around 800mb on speed test (on my work laptop its around 300mb wireless), for around 1 year. It has been fine up until around June.

Since then, my teams calls are bad quality (my face on the calls is a bit distorted) and every 30 seconds or so it freezes, judders etc.


My work laptop has had IT look at it, do software changes etc and still the same. They even just went to the extent of changing my laptop to a new Windows 11 laptop.

 

I still get the same issues. Everyone else I call or they call me are fine, people from all sorts of businesses so I know its on my end.

 

It comes up saying network poor try using my mobile. I immediaitly do a speed test and its around 300mb on my wireless laptop.

 

I have tried switchig off the router for like 5 mins and plugging back in. Video call on personal mobile is fine all be it I don't have Teams on my personal I use Facebook or Whatsapp. Never an issue with the video calling.

 

I can't see it being a Teams issue considering its across 2 different laptops now.


Sky check just says no issues with the network and sends me to here as there are "no problems".


Any ideas?

I would test to see if it is the WiFi that is the issue by doing some work using an ethernet cable to the  Sky hub. 10 metre cables can be purchased for as little as £7 if you need to run a cable to another room.

If an ethernet cable works, then you have identified the issue and would need to look at a permanent solution which might be Sky extenders or  boosters.

My partner and I work from home, and so invested in an Asus XT9 mesh system. 

Also invested in using Aquiss as my ISP.

Sky would be cheaper but I need an ISP that offers better customer service, traffic managment, congestion, peering and the like

My work laptop is a dell latitude 3340 portable unfortunately doesn't have an ethernet port. I do have an old docking station laying around, will have to try and use that. I am out the living room, through hallway into kitchen and in the dining room past the kitchen so will be a massive cable lol.

 

I game on using xbox series X and PC in that room and don't have any issues. My xbox downloads updates etc around 350mb. My xbox in living room gets a lovely 850mb.

So in trying to identify where the issue might be,  are you able to hotspot from your mobile? 

If you are able to participate in meeting(s) then the issue could be in some setting that has changed since June. 

FYI, I recently had 6 hours of Zoom meetings from a Premier Inn hotel room using the data on my  Smarty plan. Worked incredibly well and, If I recall correctly, only used 6GB of data.

I can't use Teams on my personal phone, I am not allowed to use anything work related login wise on personal devices.

So you cannot use your phone to provide internet access for your work laptop?

That's what I meant by using your phone as a hotspot.
