500mb FTTP getting 150mb!

Hi all,

So after signing up for the 145mb FTTP and having it installed on the day I got 140mb via WiFi. However afterwards it dropped to around 60mb.

Waited 2 weeks as advised then speeds were around 20 to 40mb! All over the place.

Prior to this had no issues via fibre and copper on the 76mb service.

Having complained extensively was then given the 500mb service for a little extra, again on the day speeds hit over 340mb.

Now I'm getting between 140 and 160mb!

I've reset the router, rebooted it, turned off all devices, done a speed test via wired ethernet and still 140mb or so.

I've seen some recommended a different router so I'd like to know which router modem that has a phone line built in would be best?

Or if going the WiFi route is better via a separate router?

Strange though how on the day I get the speeds I signed up for then a day later it just drops really low.

@SuperSaiyan4 the Sky landline facility definitely requires the Sky hub no third party router can give you that but you can buy a third party VOIP service if you want and even potentially get the number ported.

If you are testing over a gigabit ethernet link and only getting 140Mb/s changing routers is unlikely to work as the issue is almost certainly in the feed. There are an increasing number of people reporting they are not getting the speeds they should over FTTP from Sky. It is interesting to note that Sky have taken their Gigabit product off sale. It seems likely Sky have bandwidth issues at some exchanges including yours,  it certainly isn't national as coincidentally my own Ultrafast service was connected last week and it delivers speeds around 540Mb/s down.

I would leave it until, after the holiday but I would formally complain. If Sky cannot deliver the speeds they should they will release you from contract. Switching to another ISP should enable you to get the speeds you want as the restriction appears to be in Sky's backhaul. Thank you for the info, I would be interested then to see what the best alternative wifi router would work alongside the Sky router.

I saw some mention turning off the WiFi and using a seperate one. Any recommendations for about £150?

@SuperSaiyan4 you dont need a router as such rather you need an access point. PersonallY I havec3 TP-Link Deco M4 units operating in access point mode which gives me 300Mb/s of thereabouts everywhere and the full 500Mb/s in the main living area wherectge base unit is placed. Cost is roundabout £100 but there are loads of others around. If you want wifi6 speeds you will pay more.
