Re: 3rd party router replacement

Thanks everyone, yeah I saw this one, but wondered as I have a lot of devices on the network whether the 2800 TP Link would be better?

Ideally I want a modem/router all in one, and in an ideal world it would be lovely to have wifi 6 and tri-band, but I'm not sure that even exists with integrated modem?

We have no fewer than 25 devices connected and sometimes as many as 40 without issue.

Triband combo modem/router with Wi-Fi 6 - I think you may struggle right now.

Re: 3rd party router replacement

At the moment I have around 40 devices active with dynamic IP, and around 30 more fixed IP most of which are active, using the TP=Link VR2100, cost £99 from Amazon in the UK.

Re: 3rd party router replacement

If I went for the TP 2100, could I pair the TP Link Deco M4 (3 pack) with it?

Re: 3rd party router replacement

Does anyone know if the Synology Routers will work with Sky if a separate modem is put in place?

The Synology router does support DHCP Option 61 for authenticating to Sky so you should have no issues connecting that router to Sky through a modem for a VDSL2 connection to the BT cabinet.

I'm assuming you are on Sky superfast broadband FTTC VDSL2 and that requires a modem that supports VDSL2. The Vigor 130 modem supports VDSL2 but is rather expensive and some choose to use a cheap router that supports a pure bridge for VDSL2.

Re: 3rd party router replacement

This one?

DrayTek Vigor 130 ADSL/VDSL

So silly question, but if I bought this I would plugin and access via an ethernet cable on 192.168.0.1 and configure for Sky Mer - yes? - then how would the Synology plugin and be used as the wifi modem across the network?

Also where would I set all the port forwarding/VPN/ network options? on the DrayTek or the Synology?

Sorry for all the questions justr need to be sure I know what I am doing before buyong both these products.

Re: 3rd party router replacement

Yes, that is the modem I'm talking about. The Vigor would be put into a VDSL2 bridge and if you search the forum the Vigor 130 configuration is explained in detail with screenshots.

The Synology router would be set up to authenticate with DHCP Option 61 via the settings in the internet section, login details are 'anything@skydsl|anything' where the single quotes are not used and 'anything' means absolutely anything in that section of the string. Port forwarding, VPN and network setting would all be done on the Synology because that's is doing the routing.

Re: 3rd party router replacement

Thanks mate, I think I would like to go with the DrayTek and the Synology, I love Synology products and the interface is amazing, just gonna need some help understanding how to set them both together.

I assume you setup the DreyTek on your local computer configure it for sky then plug it in to the wan port of the Sytnology Router after???

That is indeed the Vigor 130 modem for ADSL2/VDSL2 bridge to ethernet.

Re: 3rd party router replacement

@pearsori

You configure the Vigor 130 for a pure VDSL2 bridge, everything concerning Sky is done on the routing equipment, eg: the Synology.
