You will need to flash that router with the Asus Merlin firmware first, the DHCP Option 61 can almost be anything at all as long as it conforms to a format.

It's in this format for Asus Merlin firmware 12 hex characters followed by @skydsl! and then 8 hex characters as below as an example:-

Can you flash a modem router? I always stayed away from the ASUS DSL's as thought they couldn't be flashed, only the routers could.

If you can, it's a game changer for when I next update my network 🙂

The username & password are the last bit of text from @mae-3 last post.

Have a look here for the Merlin flash options.

Yep, Merlin firmware is available for modern Asus DSL routers and support the complete modem VDSL2 side of things in the router Merlin Asus firmware.

Not sure about the Merlin releases that the OP router they have chosen will support, and I don't recommend that wireless router being only 802.11n at 300Mbps with a wireless booster at all, but it's not up to me! That isn't a modern router as suggested in my post! 😉

Lovely, thanks for letting me know. The conundrum on what I choose down the line just got bigger 😉

Re: 3rd party router replacement

If you are running in a bridge (AP) or double NATing then it will work connected to the Sky router, but connected to a VDSL2 modem then it will likely have an issue because it doesn't support DHCP Option 61 that Sky uses for its authentication. Possible VPN issues in this configuration?

At two 433Mbps 802.11ac streams for 5Ghz its be okay for a standard VDSL2 connection, I'd go for something a little more powerful wireless wise to future proof it. Internet connections are getting faster quite quickly these days. But fine as far as ADSL2+ with a modem.

Sky SR203 in what mode, ADSL2+ or are you thinking of upgrading to a faster connection at a later stage, eg: VDSL2 or even faster and do you want a built-in modem for I assume so saying you want to replace it completely? And are you running anything wireless/LAN side that needs high speeds from LAN to WLAN or vice versa?

Re: 3rd party router replacement

@Morbious

Try this one, the 'TP-Link Archer VR400' it is slightly over £50 but not much and should work well and will completely replace the SR203. The router you specified last will not replace the SR203 it doesn't have a modem.

One of the reasons I've recommended that router is many have set it up for Sky, including ADSL2+ and VDSL2. 😀
