Hi everyone,
Has anyone else had issues getting 1GB from the Sky broadband hub ethernet ports? I upgraded to 1GB last Thursday and so far, I haven't noticed a speed increase when wired directly into the hub. On the other hand, WiFi seems to be pretty fast...
I've got a NETGEAR PLP1000 which I'm using to wire internet from the Sky hub to a workstation up stairs. I'm only managing speeds of around 6-7mb/s but I'm getting 10-15mb/s when on WiFi. I've even plugged an Alienware laptop directly into the Skyhub only to find that I'm getting the exact same speeds of 6-7mb/s. It looks as the the hub is throttling my ethernet connection?

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@CroesusX while a dodgy ethernet port is possible it would be an unusual fault as they either work or they dont. Your Netgear powerline adapters are far more likely to be the limiting factor. Powerline speeds do vary but its is rare to ever get more than 40% of the rated speeds in the real world. Things that can slow powerline is the use of trailing sockets so always use wall outlets for the adapters. Obviously the condition of your homes mains wiring is a factor.
One question are you quoting the right units? You post in "mb/s" network speeds are measured in Mega bits per second (properly Mb/s) while some systems (for example Steam) give Speeds in Mega Bytes per second (MB/s) there are 8 bits in a Byte so a connection speed of 400Mb/s is 50MB/s.

Yep I'm aware of that but my old virgin router never had that issue and as I've mentioned, I plugged a laptop straight into the Sky Hubs Ethernet port and got the exact same speed.
Using speedtest.net, I was getting 70mbps on Ethernet but around 280mpbs over WiFi. It just doesn't seem like I'm getting anywhere close to maximum speeds?

Yeah thats directly into the sky hub with no other ethernet ports being used. That's why I'm confused, the upload speed seems OK but the download is terrible?
On the other hand, WiFi is coming in at around 280-350mbps 🤷♂️

I am having the exact same problem since we upgraded to 900mbit full fibre.
Over wifi, I can manage to get 400 Mbps, however over ethernet on a direct connection I manage a max speed of 35 Mbps and an upload of 70Mbps.
I've tried directly plugging into the router, I've tried with 2 different types of TP-Link powerline adapters. I can't get a speed anywhere close to the WIFI connection. Is there a setting on the sky broadband hub limiting this?
The speed was actually quicker prior to upgrading the broadband when it comes to a wired connection

I've also tried plugging a direct connection into the other available ports on the router. Still, nothing makes a difference. My broadband hub firmware version is 7.02.0201.R and my model is SR203

You've got your ONT (Openreach modem) connected to port 4 on the Sky Hub? I've read that if it isn't, it can limit speeds. Also check that the Hub is configured for gigabit Ethernet and not fast in the router GUI.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@loup87 do you get the same results on different devices or is this using a single device? If the latter check the ethernet port set up especially the drivers and whatever security protection software you are running.
There are only very limited settings on the SR203 for ethernet firstly a switch between Fast Ethernet (100Mb/s) and the default Gigabit (1,000Mb/s) and a setting for power saving which defaults to off which is the best option.
As previously posted ethernet ports normally either work or they dont. As your wifi seems to be working normally it is unlikely there is a fault with the hub or the service from Sky so you need to exclude other issues on your device. If you can exclude a device issue call Sky and report the issue but its an odd one.

I have just tried again by pluggin a laptop directly into the sky broadband hub router. With a Cat 5E cable I am producing speeds of 500Mbps. Whilst this isn't the 900Mbps advertised, this is more than enough considering I would expect variance of speeds throughout the day.
I would like to confirm I have done more tests today using TP link adapters and can confirm that they are indeed the reason for such slow speeds, NOT the sky broadband hub.
I will now look into WIFI mesh networks to improve the speed upstairs.

I know I'm late to the party here but I had a very similar problem today. After much investigation I found that my issue was actually caused by a Windows process called 'Delivery Optimisation'. This is a relatively new feature that can assist downloading Windwos updates across multiple devices on your home network. I found that by disabling it my LAN speed went from about 7Mbps to 39 Mbps.
