Why is the Sky speed test showing a different result from the online speed tests?

They are measuring different things. Speeds that you see on Sky.com or My Sky app are measuring line speeds received by your Sky Hub. Whilst your speed test apps are measuring throughput (usually over WiFi) which can be affected by a whole host of factors - including environmental and hardware.

Re: broadband speed

Thanks for that Mark,  but that really doesn't help at all.

So i am to just put up with it until my contract end date and then move broadband suppliers? Or can Sky be more proactive and help?

@Amanser  what type of device are you using to do the speed test with and is it wired or on WiFi?

What is my guaranteed speed?

The good news is that your 70mbps line speed is comfortably above your guaranteed line speed of ~60mbps - guaranteed speeds will vary from home to home.

Your Wi-Fi speeds will not be guaranteed unless Sky Broadband Boost is part of your subscription, it includes a WiFi Guarantee and upgraded hardware, but from what you've described, that doesn't apply here as your 40-60 mbps WiFi speeds exceed the guaranteed minimum we'd offer

Ah, there are two types of speed guarantee.

Your Guaranteed Minimum Download Speed references line speed and from what has been described, you were guaranteed ~60mbps and are receiving 70mbps.

The WiFi Guarantee is a minimum of 3mbps in every room in your home which your speeds already exceed. We have found that our new Hub offers improved WiFi, but if you made the decision to invest in the new Sky Broadband Hub there would be no guarantee of improved WiFi speeds.

Ultimately, the internet and WiFi are two very different beasts - moving data 3,000 metres through glass cables is far easier than 10 metres through the air.

If there are specific questions around how to improve your WiFi experience, I recommend getting in touch with our contact centre who will have access to all your information. 🙂

Re: broadband speed

@Highlinder I have ran the test on my Samsung s20+ and also on the company laptop I have. WIFI connection on both as I have no way for a wire connection.

I have also tried to download a game I purchased on the PS4, a 45gb game told me it'll take 70+ hours to download. I have just retested on the laptop with just that running and got 4mbps down and 2.8mbps up.

So all devices are on WiFi and none are hardwired at all?

Re: broadband speed

Yes they are all WiFi. Silly me thought in 2021 I could be wireless with decent speeds. Although given I did a speed test on the 25th June again on my mobile and got 67.6mbps, thats my bad.

You see the technology is there, but what is the make up of your house. Sold walls stop the signal getting through and other factors. Also have to take into account the placement of the router, and if there is a lot of other people around you that also have their WiFi.

Re: broadband speed

As I mentioned if I stretch my right arm out, I'll be touching the router. All that is between me and the router is fresh air.

@Amanser It maybe fresh air, but it could well be highly congested airspace.
Have you split the WiFi bands on the router or are they synced? It maybe your devices are clinging to the 2.4GHz network rather than using 5GHz which is significantly less crowded and can enable much higher data rates.
