Recently I upgraded to a more modern router, however now I am getting agonising ping spikes that happen every 30 seconds, this makes games like valorant, rocket league, csgo unplayable, my broadband is the superfast package, I have also noticed whilst downloading the megabytes per second goes down from 4Mb/s to something like 0.1kb/s and goes back up, resembling something simaliar to the ping spikes, I have looked through many threads and have not found a single solution, this is very frustrating because I am very competitive with games.
I am on WiFi, however with ethernet the spikes are the same and I get spikes on every device, not only the pc, after constant restarts and countless hours of searching online I have decided to post here as my second to last resort, with the last one being contacting skys engineers, 2 more people use the WiFi, but it doesn't matter if my pc is the only one connected, the lag spikes are the same, at this point I'm just thinking of switching broadband, sky advertises super fast as 'super for gaming' but for me this is clearly not the case
Any help would be appreciated

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@SparksyKai Ping spikes can be caused by a number of issues, and it is not always the ISP as has been proven multiple times in threads on similar issues in the past.
You will need to go through everything methodically, and to start with if you are a pro gamer, the fact you are using WiFi is a big red flag. All competitive gamers i know, always use an ethernet cable, end of. It doesn't matter if they have to route it somewhere, under the carpet or wherever, they use a cable. WiFi is usually the cause of such problems in 9/10 cases.
Once your stats pics are moderated that could indicate if there is a line issue. If those look ok then you might need to do other digging...

The thing is, when I had my old router and I used wifi I didnt have any lag spikes at all, I did have slightly higher ping and much worse downloade speed but besides from that it was much better for gaming then now

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@SparksyKai At first glance the line stats look fine, the figures show a healthy line and no DLM action on it. The ookla speedtest, is that over Ethernet direct to the router (i'm assuming it is as there is no jitter reading)?
Do you have any Sky Q boxes at all? How many days/weeks have you had the new router?
27 Dec 2021 10:50 PM
Well the ookla test was on wifi, and ive already tested it on ethernet on my pc downstairs and i still had the ping spikes but i normally have my pc upstairs and for me running a cable all the way up the stairs is pretty unconvenient for me, if its not the actual internet itself then I dont know what is, ethernet doesnt fix the spikes, it happens on all devices, I also dont have any sky q boxes, with my old router im pretty sure I had one but i was told to not use it anymore

That's probably because your old router was 2.4Ghz only, while the Q Hub is 2.4 / 5 Ghz, and your computer is now likely to be connecting on 5Ghz
Personally I'd suggest you try splitting and renaming the bands, then connecting to the 2.4Ghz signal.
As posted by @jamesn123
So to split the two channels you need to go to your router config page which can be found by typing 192.168.0.1 into your web browser. To access the page, you'll need;
username: admin
password: sky OR your WiFi password
- Select wireless from the navigation bar and scroll down a little and untick the 'Synchronise 2.4GHz and 5GHz settings'
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and hit apply.
- Once the page reloads you need to go to the 5GHz wireless settings page on the sub navigation bar below where you click wireless before
- In the 5GHz section you want to go to the box called 'Name (SSID)' and add something like 5g to the end of the current name
- Scroll down and hit apply
- Then on any wireless device you should now see two networks. One network will be the same name as usual and will be 2.4GHz band and the other will be the usual name with 5G on the end (Or whatever you typed). The WiFi password should be the same if you havent changed it.

Sadly I've already tried that, I've found that the 2.4ghz is the same and the 5ghz has a much weaker signal

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreThe hub you have is pretty awful for WiFi. It was never that good when it came out.
Either way, gaming over WiFi, especially using a cheap ISP router is never going to end well
You have a couple options really.
1. Use ethernet
2. Pay for broadband boost with Sky which entitles you to the newer router
3. Try powerline adapters
4. Use a 3rd party router

thanks, Ill try a 3rd party router, whats a good router under £200 that I should get?
