Re: SkyGlass Awful

I am with you 100% Satele, i have had my unit 10 days now and am on the verge of returning it.Yesterday a great example. The TV froze or went off 3 times. Only way to fix was to unplug, wait 10 minutes, re boot.Failed to record "add to my playlist" one programme from Chanel4, and one programme from Discovery. Continued gaps in programmes available to watch or add to playlist. A TV voice control that mostly does not work. Many many fewer chanels available compared with SKYQ  see https://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Sky-Glass/Channels-not-on-Sky-Glass/td-p/3799480

and yet i am paying more each month (Excluding cost of TV) and i stopped having Sky Cinema to keep my monthly fee manageable.I genuinely feel i am part of some kind of Sky Beta testing and paying for the privilege. The quality of the picture is ok, just, but i am left very disappointed with the sound. I even watched the F1 race yesterday to experience the unit in all its glory, both visually and sound. The set froze. I to can not  delete anything from my play list. So whilst Marky Mamil is entitled to his opinion,( though perhaps not in a way that belittles others) let me assure him that these things are very much happening and to lots of other SkyGlass users, if only he were to read other sky forums he may understand that.PS i to am missing QVC.

Re: SkyGlass Awful

I cancelled my order this morning which was schudeled for delivery on the 13th Novemeber and the process was simple although the guy did try to convince to at least try the Sky glass but reading thru the comments I decided to wait 6 months or so hopefully the system will be better. I have had Q re-instated cheaper than I was already paying and the delivery tracking is now showing " cancelled by retailer "  I'm really disappointed Sky didn't let a select number of people test the glass out in the wild before going for a full on release which obviously has produced some negative comments or is it people were expecting too much from this 1st launch ?

Could be a bit dangerous with those night hunting big cats on the prowl not to mention possible dodgy internet connection and power supply issues.......but I agree about pre-testing of some sort should have been done.

Glass has no local recording, many minor channels are not included, it's entirely reliant on functioning internet.  Glass TVs/boxes are not WiFi 'hotspots'

 is it better then NowTV

'Better' is subjective.  Glass is certainly capable of higher resolution output

and does it have the equivalent of Mini Q boxes

Glass 'Pucks' are the equivalent, but capable of UHD/HDR

@Peter55 I dont have Sky Glass as yet, my system is due on Thursday. No Sky Glass is not a full replacement for Sky Q it is quite s different concept many of the issues you see on the forum are caused by people not appreciating thst fact.. Sky Q works by having multiple tuners and a hard disc recorder so can record up to 6 programmes at once and watch on up to 3 TVs.at once.

In contrast Sky Glass is a streaming system where nothing is stored on the unit itself. You can effectively bookmark content to watch later (the term recording is confusing here IMO) but that may be drawn from an App like iPkayrr, Netflix or from Sky's own servers. If you intend to record and watch a lot of content from the TV channels Q is a better option. If you mainly already watch from apps Glass can work for you. The main gain over Now is the integration between the apps so one search will cover any apps you have.

The Glass main unit is a TV and the supplementary units called pucks can be used on up to 7 TVs they are actually standalone units but Sky insist you buy one Glass TV and operate them on the same network you cannot get the pucks on their own. Each unit can stream in UHD unlike Q which is limited to UHD on the main unit. The pucks and the TV share the playlist but do not have a seamless handover as Q boxes do.

Presumably it was, but only within Sky, and perhaps without the back-end services required to do so properly (and possibly by people who may not entirely reflect the wider Sky user-base in viewing habits)

Re: SkyGlass Awful

I would not recommend Sky glass to anyone had nothing but problems with it and I am in the process of having Sky Q put back on which is not as easy as I thought 10 days since phoned up still not cancelled

Re: SkyGlass Awful

Finally got my Glass - seen none of the stability or streaming issues at all. Wired to two load balanced 80meg lines with aggressive QoS on an enterprise router appliance - everything starts immediately and is rock solid

@bdavbdavHows the picture quality?

Re: SkyGlass Awful

@lfcg @Definitely a lot better than the Samsung 1080p set it replaced - been really pleased with the live sky content, box sets content, and even the quality on 4OD. The UHD is nice, but the HD content seems to be high enough bitrate that is pretty good looking without the UHD content.

May I say what a great explanation of the Glass system vs Q you have provided.
Had SKY been more upfront about the workings of the new product there would have been a lot less frustration.

At home we tend to watch ( having first recorded ) terrestrial channels including dramas from ITV and unfortunately Glass shunts you across to ITV Hub to watch programmes in your own time. Rather than being offered streaming direct from SKY servers in HD you are relegated to SD streams. And of course BBC doesn't offer many of its programmes at all on BBC iPlayer.

There appears to be a hassle with the ads on ITV Hub too. Should you have to leave off streaming a programme and return to it later you are put back to the start of the programme with the hassle of all those pesky ads to wade through again until you reach the spot where you previously were.

For those with no access to a dish, Glass is a super option it would seem if all the equipment works properly. Not sure it's a better option for anyone else at all aside from their being independent 4K hdr Dolby Atmos pucks rather than paired HD mini-boxes that sometimes lose connection to the main Q Box.

Probably the most apt point.  Did they get a Mrs Brown 72, of Acacia Avenue who mainly watches ITV Soaps, Loose Women, and Steph's Packed Lunch at a time of her choosing, to test Glass?

Did Professor Plum, who watches BBC's Sky at Night, and Would I Lie to You? and other programmes that maybe don't make it to iPlayer get to test their new product?

Re: SkyGlass Awful

When it comes down to it, do Sky even care about these bad experiences customers are having? Sky is Sky. Pretty unlikable, but seen as essential by many, regardless at how awful they are perceived to be.

But in my view, things are different now. They are in the business of selling tv's. So have new comparisons to be drawn to. It's not just about their service anymore. I simply won't pay £1k for a tv with such picture issues. I can't imagine many people would go into a shop, view a Glass panel compared to other TVs next to it and choose it over them. So I'm going back to Q. Hopefully with a bit of a discount. With another whinge they won't swap my old Q box for a new one that's HDR capable for free. But it's Sky. Same old Sky.

Ad skipping in ITV hub is possible as explained here https://youtu.be/q_YHHJQCpGw by forum member @MachLoop in another of his helpful videos.
