Sky q mini box in garage

Hi chaps

I took the powerline adapter from the garage and plugged it next to the indoor one, and then conncted laptop via ethernet cable and got 20mbs speed. So, it seems the powelines cant cope with the garage I guess? The garage is only a few feet away from the house. 

Any suggestions?? Shall I just get a quote for hard wiring to the garage?

@crafter79Despite what we have been saying it looks as though the garage and the other end are not on the same electrical circuit and it is not working between the two.

Hi @crafter79 

Full Ethernet to the garage from your router would be the ideal option.   Bear in mind to use external grade if any of it is outdoors.

Depending on the quotes you get you may think it's worth trying a couple of Lan Devolo.

I posted a link; you would need the starter pack (2 units).

You can always return these if they do not work.

@crafter79I have looked at the specification of your powerline adapters and they seem to be AV rather than the later AV2. The AV2 ones are better across different mains circuits also be careful that you don't have any surge suppression fitted anywhere in the circuit, often garage sockets have this built in.

Provided the sockets with the Powerline Adaptors do not have Surge protection there should not be any issues

Hi @crafter79 

Lan is a direct connection to the Ethernet,

WiFi units still rely on the unpredictability of WiFi.

If the priority is to connect an Ethernet device (ie your mini) then simple Lan unit is all that is required.

Your mini will act as a WiFi hotspot and so additional WiFi should not necessarily be required.   You can always add additional WiFi if required.

Surge protection sockets will have a reset button @crafter79 .

There is no problem if Powerline units are used in simple switched or unswitched sockets

When you say the mini box can be a wifi hotspot, what does that mean?

As you are on Sky broadband all Q devices (main Q boxes and minis) are automatically set up to  emit WiFi for connecting other devices.

So the mini will be a WiFi Access point.

Correct @crafter79 

That's provided the Mini WiFi is not turned off in the hidden menu.

@oldfella I just tried it on my main box and it didn't show up as available to connect to by WiFi, and I've never switched that off before. We did the mini that's correct

Hi @crafter79 
If you are on Sky Broadband then the main Q box is automatically an Access point .  Maybe it is only on the 2.4 Ghz band (and not 5 Ghz)
