Sky q mini box in garage

Hello. I was hoping someone could help please.

I have sky q connected to a sky broadband hub wirelessly.

I have a powerline adapter plugged in by ethernet into the sky router, and the other powerline adapter plugged into an access point router in the garage.

I've just got a sky q mini box, any ideas how to get it connected please?

It just sits on step two of four.

Thank you for any help in advance.

Hi @crafter79

Sky Q minis will not connect by WiFi to 3rd party Access points.

Try connecting it by Ethernet to your Powerline Adaptor.

You will need a simple unmanaged Ethernet switch if you don't have enough Ethernet connections

@oldfella thank you for taking the time to reply.

Would something like this work do you know please?

If I plug the power line into it, then connect the other devices to it as well?

TP-Link TL-SF1005D 5-Port 10/100 Mbps Desktop Ethernet Switch/Hub, Ethernet Splitter, Plug & Play, no configuration required https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0766D8HZ3/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_RYJ7GRXZQ8S0FSQW5ZDW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Re: Sky q mini box in garage

@oldfella sorry to bother again.

I've got it set up as discussed, but the picture keeps freezing for a few seconds, then plays again, then skips again, then freezes again etc etc.

Are they any settings or anything I need to change? Or tips or anything please?

Thank you

Hi @crafter79

To ensure the mini is connected OK by Ethernet carry out a Network reset on the mini with the Ethernet connected.

Network Reset found in mini Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Do not carry out out any WPS and wait for the mini to connect by Ethernet.

Once it does connect go into the hidden mini menu and turn off both bands of WiFi.  Confirm before exit.

Powerline is not guaranteed and solely depends on the condition and complexity of your mains circuit between the Powerline units.

Hi @crafter79

To enter hidden menu press Home and navigate down to Settings but do not select Settings.
With Settings highlighted press 0 0 1 Select.
Go Network and turn off both bands of WiFi. Confirm before exit

@oldfella

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I've tried that but still hasnt fixed the issure.

Would you think its  because the powerline adapters arent good enough, and if so,  are there any other options apart from hard wiring ethernet from the house?

Thank you

Hi @crafter79

I suspect Powerline is the issue.

Your mains connection may not be suitable.

Is the garage on the same consumer unit?

What Powerline adaptors are you using?

Hi @crafter79

Here I am using Devolo 1200 Powerline units.

I chose Devolo at the time because I know they use the Earth conductor as well as the power conductors to transfer the Powerline.   I'm sure there are others now doing this..

Do you WiFi from yours in the garage?

You can check on your mobile by doing a Speedtest .   (Fast.com)

Devolo units are not cheap and they are now available as 2400 units.   Obviously they do not give this in practice but they are some of the fastest available.   If they are not suitable you could always return them.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-Magic-LAN-Add-Powerline/dp/B07H66RLXD/ref=asc_df_B07H66RLXD/?

Personally I would recommend Lan units as I am sure the mini connection is the priority.   You can always add a WiFi booster later

Re: Sky q mini box in garage

@oldfella

I plugged a wireless access point into the powerlines in the garage,  but when connected to it, only got around 2mbps per second.

I have a TP wifi extender in the kitchen window facing the garage, and get speeds around 20mbps when connected to my normal wifi in the garage now, but cant seem to get the sky mini box to connect to it.

Hi @crafter79

If the Powerline are WiFi what speed do you get connecting to that WiFi directly and not plugging in another Access point?
