Re: Sky Q not working with BT Smart Hub 2

I noticed that you could t split the frequencies as soon as it was installed and I checked the settings inside the hub. The smart setup feature has been disabled, and I have also kept the 5Ghz range disabled. As I said in my original post, since plugging the Sky extender back in downstairs again everything is fine. If I turn the 5Ghz setting back on inside the smart hub then I lose the connection to the Sky box again. I know the connnection between the Sky Q box and mini boxes is achieved on 5Ghz so just assumed there was a clash between the smart hub and the Sky box.

I'm happy though now (apart from the shocking Wi-Fi signal). Sky is fully functional again, all down to the sighting of a repeater.

The discs are funny, I originally set them up by plugging them in to the hub and then moving them once they were paired. I've subsequently tried to use their app but can't get it set up properly because it's trying to get me to set everything up as if it's a fresh install, and after 4 hours of running around the house trying to get everything back online, I refuse to start from scratch again. Hopefully the engineers visit today will have a significant impact on the signal when they install more discs.

@CP012Yes as I said the app is a good idea but useless, if the engineers are BT they will want to set up the discs where the app says there is maximum signal, for me that was in the centre of the rooms, not very practical.

Re: Sky Q not working with BT Smart Hub 2

Morning,

I'v been using the Smart Hub 2 and SkyQ for a while now and just recently, like the last 3-4 days I've been experiencing the main SkyQ box losing connection.

It seems once I reboot the SH2 the connection comes back but the connection becomes lost again after a while - just varies how long the connection lasts for time wise.

The SkyQ box (in living room downstairs) is connected by ethernet via a BT (very old model) powerline adapter and the SH2 (upstairs) has a cable running to the main master powerline adapter.

As mentioned, the connection has been fine until the last few days and I just dont know whats happened as nothing has changed, could it be the powerline adapter thats at fault?

Its just becoming very frustrating with the constant lost of connection 😞

Re: Sky Q not working with BT Smart Hub 2

Try going in to the hub and disabling the 5Ghz setting. That has worked for me. I know you've got them wired in but the connection between the main Sky box and the mini boxes transmits over the 5Ghz range. It might help?

Re: Sky Q not working with BT Smart Hub 2

Thanks for the reply.

I may have figured out what the problem is.....I've never setup the main SkyQ box to be connected via Wifi so gave that a go to bypass the powerline adapter.

It connected via Wifi fine but how long this connection will last, who knows but ill monitor for now.

I also noticed on the powerline adapter the status light is red which indicates its on a bad connection so maybe it could be time to update my powerline adapter.

That could explain why after I rebooted the SH2 it connected fine via the powerline adapter but after a few mins the connection went again.

Re: Sky Q not working with BT Smart Hub 2

Very Interesting to see all replies and effort needed to overcome compatability issues.

To be honest since we swopped to SKY Superfast Broadband (40-50MHz); no issue with Mini-Q Boxes.

Re: Sky Q not working with BT Smart Hub 2

So had new BT hub2 installed and sky q internet kept dropping until we did this:

put booster connected by ethernet cable to main sky q box

turned off smart manager

changed 5ghtz channel to 48( worked better than 40 as is further away from 36 which was thw starting point. Had to turn boosters on and off a few times until it all settled. Now fine and stable

@helja23

Smart Setup rather than 'smart manager', but yes, those are all good tips.

Hub Manager is the name BT give to the web interface to the router.

Hopefully one day BT will see sense and update the smarthub2 so that the frequencies can be split.

I had trouble with my smarthub2 (strangely not with Q).

I thought about going back to my original smarthub but needed my Black discs to work, in the end I turned off 5Ghz in the smarthub 2 connected the original smarthub to the 2 but with 2.4Ghz turned off. I now have 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz working independently with the Black discs extending the 2.4Ghz as the devices that I previously could not reach were 2.4Ghz only.

Re: Sky Q not working with BT Smart Hub 2

I had the same problem and tried everything including changing my sky equipment. Both BT and sky engineers couldn't sort it out.
In the end the only way mine would work was changing to these settings on the hub.

Firstly turn smart off then change to
2.4ghz channel 11

5 ghz channel 36.
unfortunately this isn't enough on its own. Kindly BT sent me some mini connectors. Plug one into your hub and the other into the sky box via Ethernet cables. The signal is transferred through your house wiring. Just like a TP link.
Good luck

@ritainThe thing not to do is to change the 5Ghz channel to 36 you need to be as faraway from it as possible as that is the default channel that the Sky mesh uses.

Re: Sky Q not working with BT Smart Hub 2

I've just checked my settings and that's what I'm on. I tried every other combination at the time and nothing else would work for me. I can't wait to leave BT but I'm not paying £230 to terminate.

Bizarre. That will completely overlap with the internal Q mesh.

I don't know why anyone bothers to use BT's routers. They've always been absolute cheap garbage.

@ritainTalk to BT and get them to change your hub to the earlier smarthub, unless you have "complete WiFi" with the black discs which will only work with the smarthub2 (tell them about it not working with Sky Q, they do know about the problems)

With the original smarthub you can split the frequencies which cures most problems.

Unfortunately the BT hub is one  of the better ones supplied by broadband providers however you could always buy a better router/hub.

Re: Sky Q not working with BT Smart Hub 2

My set up is working fine with the additional mini connectors they gave me.
I'll just run my contract down to below £100 termination fee and jump to sky.
Would buying my own router solve the problem? I've still got my old bt router
