Sky Q and ethernet link to BT Whole Home Mesh

Hello,

Looking for a bit of advice.

I have Sky Superfast BB & Sky Q  2TB with 1 mini-box.

I have just linked up BT Whole Home 4 discs with a Netgear GS305 5 port gigabit ethernet switch box .

I

My 1st BT mesh disc is linked via ethernet to my Sky router. My BT mesh 2nd disc is linked to the Netgear 5 port box which I've linked in my Phillips Hue via ethernet & it works great.

My 3rd & 4th BT mesh discs are speard round the rest of my home.

Now i've turned off 2.4GHz on my Sky router & disabled 2.4GHz on my Sky Q main box. To reduce interference with my BT Mesh network.

However, when I connect my Sky Q box to the BT mesh network via ethernet to the Netgear switch box (which is ethernet linked to disc 2), it keeps crashing my BT Mesh network.

Now i'm not very technical at all, just using Google to assist me really.

Can anyone please offer any assistance/guidance on how I can ethernet link my main Sky Q box to the BT network, so I can totally disable my Sky routers wifi 2.4 & 5 GHz. I'll link my Sky Q mini box via ethernet then too.

All I want is just one wifi network, that being BT Mesh.

Thanks in advance

Iggy

@IggyR35There is no easy answer as one of the discs is effectively intended to replace the WiFi in your router with one White disk connected by Ethernet to the router and the WiFi turned off in your original router (unless your router has a bridge mode).

All your WiFi then comes from your discs.

The problem is that you cannot connect mini boxes to the BT mesh so you have to connect to the discs by Ethernet this includes the main Q box. However even if you have enough discs they will not have enough Ethernet sockets unless you have one near each Q box. (you can use an Ethernet switch to get more sockets)

Unfortunately although only some people are effected there is a known problem connecting discs by Ethernet BT and Sky have been trying to solve the problem but have abandoned it.

@bob1234

Thanks for your reply.

Ok, so looks like no option of wired connection.

So if i trun off 2.4GHz & 5GHz WAP on my Sky router, also remove the wired ethernet connection from my Sky router to my Sky Q box, how do I link mt BT mesh network to my Sky Q boxes?

Sorry for the stupid Q's.

From what I can ascertain only the 'original' BT whole home discs work - the full-size white ones.

I have this setup and works perfectly.

All Wi-Fi is handled by the WH but all Q boxes are connected via Ethernet to the WH discs.

@PandJ2020

I have the BT WH white discs.

You have managed to hard wire via ethernet your WH discs to your Sky Q box?

Can you please explain how?

I needed more than 1 ethernet port, so got a Netgear GS305.

I run ethernet from my WH disc to the GS305 which has 5 ethernet ports. I then use one port hardwired to my Hue Light bridge. I was going to use another port to hard wire my Sky Q box via the GS305 to my WH disc. But it just crashed & my Sky Q reverted wo my old Sky router wifi!

Yes only some people have trouble with that way but needed to flag up it was a know problem.

I have used both White and black discs, the White ones did not work but the black ones (with the smarthub2) worked with no problem.

Hi

Could you please advise if your set up is still working since the up grades on firmware?

Re: Sky Q and ethernet link to BT Whole Home Mesh

Thanks for quick reply.

I have same set up except every time I connect Q box by Ethernet cable it throws the discs out.

Had this set up for over a year working perfectly and only been dropping out for last 3 weeks.

I have had to full factory reset on discs to get them up and running.

Sky say SkyQ cannot connect to BT Whole home.

Thank for your post.

Re: Sky Q and ethernet link to BT Whole Home Mesh

I have had my main SkyQ box linked wirelessly to my BT Whole Home Discs for over a year. It does lose connection now and again. If there is a power cut or the WH goes down (for upgrades I assume) the main SkyQ box is the only device in my house that does not automatically reconnect. But I can manually put the wifi code in no problem and it is happy again.

I recently got a SkyMulti Box. I have a long thin house (Hence the need for BT WH Discs in the first place). I assumed the SKymulti would use the BTWH. But I discover it needs to connect direct to the main SkyQ box.  As this is about 12m away and through 3 breeze block walls I doubted if it would work at all. It does but with the odd 'freeze up'. Sometimes this also caused the SKYQ to disconnect from the BTWH.

It may be I can live with this but it would be useful if the Multi could bridge back to the SKYQ by the BTWH. Alternatively I see the following suggestions through forums etc.

(1) Disable 5ghz on the main box. Then it will use 2.4ghz to connect to the multi. This is slower but has better range so might work just as well and more stable.

(2)  Get an Generic WIFI extender. (For about £50 on amazon). WPS the main SKYQ box to it and WPS the multi box to it. SKY do their own extender for about £120. But is this just the same technology with a Sky badge on?

If the multi becomes more unstable I might try these options to see if it improves.

Neither option 1 or 2 will work as unless you have Sky as a broadband provider the boxes will only link using their own mesh on 5Ghz Ch36.

Sky will provide a Q booster free of charge IF they think it is needed.

OR

You could try connecting your mini box and main box by ethernet to a discs.

OR

Use a powerline LAN extender to connect your mini box to the main box.

Re: Sky Q and ethernet link to BT Whole Home Mesh

Thanks @bob1234 ,

I could try the powerline LAN extender. Would the Multi box automatically switch to that connection if it 'sees' the SKYQ on it? Or would I have to turn off its WIFI somehow?

@Shirehorseboxes should use the best available connection which would be the LAN extender which the boxes would see as Ethernet.

However you can turn off WiFi in the mini box if you wish but you still need the WiFi on in the main Q box as you need the 2.4Ghz to link it to your router.

To turn off WiFi  use the Engineer's menu

Go to settings but do not do anything.

Enter 001 and then press selecr (do not press select until this point)

Nothing seems to happen but the content changes.

Re: Sky Q and ethernet link to BT Whole Home Mesh

I used a pair of BT powerline Internet extenders. Connected one direct to my BT Fibre hub, the other to my SkyQ box.

The main SkyQ box is now stable. Went to the multi room box. Did a power off reboot. That has come back happy as well. Still connecting to SkyQ box by its own direct sky wifi connection.

Will see how it goes!
