Simply that Sky don't currently have a logistics path for despatching main Q boxes in any way other than with installers, and get them returned that way too.  I suspect part of the process of swapping out the v1 hardware may well be setting up a postal system, otherwise the installer hours consumed in just driving will be outrageous.

I suspect Sky shouldn't bother taking back the obsolete boxes because they're obsolete.

Normally yes, BT.2020 is 10-bit. This is why I was surprised that the Sky Q box can output 8-bit BT.2020.

Re: Sky HDR

Randomly I did the exact same thing yesterday for the same reason, renewed my contract as it had expired, and I too mentioned my box did not support the HDR upgrade. The preseon who I had been passed to then passed me onto an engineer, who insisted it was a software update, kept spinning a story about old boxes and new boxes getting the update first, but said I definitely didnt need a new box. I explained my model number didnt support the update he said that was a mistake on the website and he would get straight onto the website team and get them to update, completely untrue, just making it up as he was going along......shocking customer service. Feeling really frustrated that support can tell two different poeple on the same day two different things, really not impressed and shall follow this up today.

Hi @ribbs   Straight answer is wait until SKY create the free swap registration system (covid-19 got in the way).

@ribbs answered several hundred times before in this thread but

If you have the orginal V1 2TB with on board power supply it does not support HDR. You can check model numbers here

It is confused position but trusted Sky contacts have said these boxes cannot be upgraded by firmware as the chips cannot support HDMI 2.0b. Some customer agents and press reports say they can but I trust the engineer's opinion.

Sky have no path for changing boxes at the moment but have indicated they will introduce something before HDR is rolled out fully this is in essence a proof of concept test. There are thought to be around 1 million V1 boxes out there you are not alone. If you get a box switch you are likely to get another v1 box.

You can call Sky if you want they will take your call whatever the message says but they will (should?) tell you the same info.

They're not obsolete. They're perfectly suitable for anyone with a non HLG supporting TV (ie pretty much any UHD TV sold before 2016) or even those who don't have a UHD TV at all.

Re: Sky HDR

This is just not true I had a faulty SkyQ 2tb box replaced less than a year ago with a V1 SkyQ Siver 2tb box. They do not replace like for like. Now I have an old box with no HDR. Thanks Sky.

In theory you are correct.

In real life, these boxes will be obsolete because Sky doesn't know what TV a new customer has or may upgrade to in the near future. They will only be shipping HDR compatible boxes in future. That makes the V1 boxes obsolete.

Simple. As soon as Sky include HDR as part of their offering (which seems to be some time this year perhaps), it will not make sense for them to ship boxes that cannot support that functionality. Therefore the V1 boxes are obsolete. That is pretty much the definition of obsolete.

Kudo to you and your F1 Ferrari but I don't think your analogy is fully thought through.

If, next season, all F1 cars were required to meet a new standard for say, emissions - your engine at least may be obsolete. That is what obsolete means.

Obviously there will be instances where this doesn't happen. But I think what is being said here, which is specifically about v1 boxes, is that you shouldn't try getting your v1 box swapped at the moment as they won't change it to a v3 2tb box. The replacement will likely be an equal version.
