Quantum leap series 2 episode 8

Why are sky not showing the quantum leap series 2 episode 8 "jimmy"

I have downloaded the entire 5 series to watch when i want to find it is not available to download and is also not being shown on the syfy channel during the normal run of the programme, it would be due to be broadcast on tuesday 17th august but its being skipped from episode 7-9. I can only think they are trying to be too PC and it is due to the content  of the storyline being about a person with learning difficulties but the character of jimmy lamotta features in 3 other episodes which are available

If by "PC" you mean respectful to those with Downs syndrome, and not wishing to perpetuate out-of-date language and attitudes, then yes. How can Sky be too kind?

Re: Quantum leap series 2 episode 8

Actually if you watch the episode it does the opposite and explain that all people have a place in society regardless of disability, the character of "jimmy" is the hero of the episode.

@Bigmal00

Regardless of the message, it must have language that means it can no longer be broadcast. I know something said in one scene in particular is not acceptable.

Re: Quantum leap series 2 episode 8

Absolutley ludicrous. If this isn't the woke brigade gone mad then I don't know what is.
it's clearly been removed due to the fact that there's language in this episode that Wokies disapprove of. Once again judging history by today's standards without giving any thought to the actual message this episode puts across. As someone earlier wrote Jimmy is the star of this episode and also makes other appearances in the show. Grow some balls sky and stop pandering to the woke illiberal liberals that are dominating what we can do, say, watch, think.  Orwell was right after all and we're all doomed.

Sky's "official" response

Good evening,

Thanks for your email.

Sky considers itself to be a responsible broadcaster and it is never our
intention to offend or upset our audience in any way.

Due to language used throughout the programme which can be seen to be
highly offensive, we have made the decision to cease broadcasting of
this episode to prevent any upset to our viewers.

I hope this explains our position and why the episode isn't available.

As "jimmy" features in 3 other episodes in the series which sky are showing, which have language similar to that in the banned episode i find this a weak and cowardly response.

The whole premise of the series is it is set IN THE PAST and handles other such sensitive topics as **bleep**, teenage pregnancy, inter-racial marrige, racism, homophobia and womens rights. Are sky blocking any of these episodes, some of which are far more "shocking" in there portrayl of outdated attitudes.

No they arent.

Ah yes, "wokeism". The standard dismissive counter argument deployed by those seeking to preserve the bigoted attitudes of the past, which have no place today.

I applaud Sky's editorial judgement.

Re: Quantum leap series 2 episode 8

Attitudes have changed since 1990, good, but rightly so Quantum Leap tackled subjects that were ahead of its time. If they were to cancel "Jimmy" for use of the 'R' word (the use of which is horrific) then they should have considered cancelling series 2 episode 18 too. Like with Fawlty Towers it could've been run with a note to say there was the use of language that didn't align with modern sensibilities?

The world hasn't gone too far being 'PC' we've learned to be more respectful! That can never be a bad thing.. surely ignoring when things weren't right doesn't solve that.

As a small aside.... I'm also irritated by the wrong leaping at the end of some of the episodes. Syfy have messed a few episodes up - likely for the above reason.

Re: Quantum leap series 2 episode 8

Interesting isn't it? I am currently watch episode 7 season 3  Black on White on Fire, I am white man married to black woman with a mixed raced son. This is sort of episode is very educational for my son and I loved QL as a kid and remember the episode Jimmy. Sky have been very good at censoring "N" word from the racial episodes and have no problem showing a man in drag (sniggers), yet they can't censor certain words from a story about a boy with Downs? In fact I found that a very educational episode too growing up. I think Sky need to review their policy. Also found the episode about muliple personalites

Re: Quantum leap series 2 episode 8

The multiple personality episode "shock theatre" is available as are the episodes "deliver us from evil' and "mirror image" all in which the character of jimmy features and his condition is mentioned.

As previously mentioned by myself and others there are far worse episodes also still available including ones featuring homophbia, extreme racisim and female **bleep**.

This series did a lot in its time to try to teach lessons on these subjects and the main point of the series is "putting right what once went wrong" meaning the people who had the predjudices were made to realise they were wrong in there way of thinking and were changed for the better. And i think it is important people see these programmes for that reason.

Whats next, will sloth be cut from the goonies or dustin hoffman cut out of rainman.

Films and tv are still made today featuring these type of subjects and it is important that they do so.

Re: Quantum leap series 2 episode 8

Oh for goodness sake, I was wondering where this episode was. We are supposed to be learning from History, not erasing it altogether! I have no problem watching something with this word in just as I've had no issue watching episodes which depict racism because the message is powerful at the end and peoples beliefs changes for the better. So what's the issue with this episode? Also why do the woke community get to choose what I can or cannot to watch?

Yawn.....

If you read through the thread, you'll see Sky Viewer Relations' rationale for omitting it.

@Kaz1954

Also why do the woke community get to choose what I can or cannot to watch?

As mentioned earlier, it's because your so-called 'woke community' does not contain insensitive, bigoted, living-in-the-past, frightened, sexist, racists. Woke is such a lazy term, and you use it very lazily.

Maybe pick this topic up with someone with cerebral palsy and see what they think about the missing Quantum Leap episode?

Why should you - with little evident appreciation for what is offensive - get to decide what is and isn't aired? What do you know about beneficial societal changes that broadcasters somehow don't?

I have no problem watching something with this word in

That doesn't surprise me.
