Poor picture quality

Hello, when my sky Q box was installed a few days ago I noticed that the picture was blurry. I have tried many times to instert the hdmi cable to the back of the tv. I am nearly certain my tv supports 2160p because it is a new tv. I just plug the hdmi cable to the back of the tv and it works but then the picture is poor. Is there anything I can try other than 2160p quality. Also I am not prepared to pay Anthony extra for hd. If anyone could tell me what I could do to improve my picture it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Gerry+Murtagh  Without subscribing to HD and UHD you will only be able to watch content in SD format!

hi @Gerry+Murtagh I am not too sure if I have fully understood your post.

Do you currently have the addon HD pack and also UHD add on pack as part of your subscription  - please advise if you have neither, one or both.

If you only have neither then you are probably better to let your TV upscale the image rather than SKy

Check the display setting in :

Main Menu -> Settings -> Setup -> Audio Visual  & set to 1080p & see if you get any improvement

If you do have the UHD pack you will need to set to 2160p to get the 4k/UHD content

It may depend on your TV as to what settings on that you may need to change - sometimes the defaults can be limiting  - Perhaps you can tell us the Make & Model of your TV

@Gerry+Murtagh If you have set your Sky Q box resolution to 2160p but are only watching content in standard definition then you will have a terrible picture.  You need to drop the resolution back to 1080i but even with that some channels will look awful.  Ideally you need to be watching in HD at a minimum.  My advise is to upgrade to HD at the least.

Re: Poor picture quality

@Dazzasky thanks for the feedback but I'm not sure what you mean by standard definition? Can I change a picture setting so it won't be at standard? I have it set to 1080i but I'm not sure if my picture is in standard definition. Any advise?

@Gerry+Murtagh For example on Sky Q, channel 106 is Sky One HD which is a high definition channel, the SD (standard definition) channel is on 806. I think you would need the HD subscription to be able to view channel 106 though I could be wrong.
If you can't view a Sky channel in HD then that confirms that you do not have the HD package hence why you are getting a poor picture quality

@Gerry+Murtagh Standard Definition is the resolution that older channels use & is the lowest quality listed in the options on the SKY Q box

The SKY box itself has a native resolution (I beleive) as 1080i which is probably the best to leave it at even if you only have SD quality as your package.

Generally speaking it is around half the quality of HD & ony new large 4K TV will show up as watchable but noticibly poorer. Some channels also have poor bitrates on the SD channels which can make them look even poorer

I suppose one question for you is how does, say BBC 1 look on SKY Q compared to when you view it on channel 1 via a normal terrestrial aerial

Re: Poor picture quality

@nigea99 @Dazzasky so if my tv does not support 2160p my only option is to purchase hd for channels. And all I really watch is sports on it is there anything that I can do in settings to just improve sports quality?

Hi @Gerry+Murtagh I think you may be misunderstanding things.

There is a difference between  what a TV can support and the quality of channels being watched.

You haven't mentioned the actual model of your new TV but I am guessing it can support 2160p BUT unless you subscribe to UHD you can't watch content at that resolution.

you may not notice a massive difference between HD & UHD but the difference between SD and HD is very noticeable (particularly on the newer 4K tvs)

hi @Gerry+Murtagh I have just looked up the specs for that TV - it is not a 4K Tv so you are limited to 1080 (HD quality) and  cannot watch UHD/4K content at 2160p

In which case I believe the default quality for SKY Sports  (in Ireland) is SD and you would need the HD pack to improve things - although I am afraid I don't know abut BT Sports
