@Chrisee Just received my new Sky broadband hub and am about to set it up. I have been reading that some users separate the bands, 2.4 and 5, and give 5 a new name. Is this recommended or is it okay to leave settings as they are? If it makes any difference, I don’t have Sky Q yet but have Sky+ HD with the wireless connector, Smart TVs and an iPad and iPhone. Sorry, but as you have probably guessed I am not very technically minded when it comes to broadband issues.

You don't need to split the SSID (WiFi name) at all.
Most people would keep it as one, but it's been split by everyone on here to see the performance when connecting to the 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
Of you do split it then you'd have to alternate between the frequencies (on for example a mobile or tablet) to get the best overall performance depending on where you are in your home and how far the 5GHz can stretch.
If you're comfortable doing this then split if not keep it the same.

As I mention here: https://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Broadband/Voip-on-Sky-Broadband/m-p/3070824#M3070793 the new Sky Hub SR203 blocks VoIP and in particuklar SIP protocol which is awful and made me switch back to my Sky Hub ER110.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@jewers only split the 2 bands if you have issues connecting devices. Some older and cheaper devices have issues with the single SSID in which case split the 2 bands otherwise leave them joined as overall it improves speeds.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@MyDigia Sky operate a transparent DNS proxy which does block some activities but for the vast majority of domestic applications and users it is of no concern. Of course if you need certain business applications you should be buying a business service rather than a domestic one Sky sell. Using your own router is also an option especially if you want thing s like SIP.

@Chrisee What a rubbish excuse... If you want SIP get business line. Sounds like a typical official response when reaching out to support reps on the phone..
Any home user who wants VoIP is considered business?!!!!
As an ISP, Sky has no right to block something unless stated, VoIP can be very well for home use. I use it connected to my sip server in London for free calls with other ip phones and softphones with my family/friends/peers and I see no reason why I should be using a business line to get that working, same way it was working before the new hub.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreSky are blocking nothing as the connection will carry any traffic simply their provided router by default enables a family protection measure. If you want SIP buy a router that supports it.

Got our new hub and white booster today after complaint WiFi was poor.
Quick to setup and seems to fix our WiFi issues which is good.
Not plugged in white booster as don’t think we need it.

Same here. Got my SR203 and the Sky booster connected to it via ethernet, and the booster connected to an unmanaged switch and all working great! 👍

I have to say, you are defeating the object of the booster. The booster is a half way house to use in areas between areas you cannot reach. You have then connected the booster to a switch?
Glad it is all working but cannot get my head around what you are trying to do.
