Well day 2 of using the new hub and I've found that my Internet connection speed is worse than the Q hub. I was getting 35+mbps on the old router, this new one barely over 25, tested connection via sky website and it says my speed to the hub could be quicker and to book a free engineer visit. However it says that they have detected a problem with internal wiring. confused as its the master filter from the socket I used with the old router, tempted to send the new hub back

@chappy5485 are you testing over Ethernet or WiFi ?

Can you also post your router stats

Been doing some tests today with the new Broadband Hub.

Been testing with a few different wifi analysers on PC, Android and iOS devices.

This new router certainly is a lot more powerful than the Sky Q hub.

Within the same room and via adjoining rooms, so within 6-18 feet of hub its putting out a -27 to -35 dmb signal.

So excellent strong signal.

Going  to the far corners of the house, upstairs doing the same and 30-50 feet down the garden its putting out -37 to -45 dmb.

From what i recall the old Sky Q hub was at best  -50 to -65 for that second reading, but not as reliable at keeping a good signal in all places.

That means for me I have a minimum 57mbps signal across the house and garden to 50 feet from my house from my 76mbs Sky broadband..

I have the hub in exactly the same place as before 4 feet 4 inches off the ground in the centre of the house, a Sky Q 2tb box in the front room lounge and a mini upstairs, so have tested it with the Sky Q mesh enabled.

Tested it using the Sky Q mesh with both boxes connected via wifi only (as I normally do) and via ethernet.

The result was the same, so the wifi signal it puts out via the mesh and its wifi hotspots is strong.

Very pleased with the increase.

Thank you for your reply, Tested both, most I've got on wifi is 27mbps and ethernet is 32mbps.

Contacted sky and they said they've found an issue with the speed which they'd like to investigate so engineer is coming out in 2 weeks(first available). Just checked on the mysky app and it says that my speed has been below the sky fibre max guarantee in the last 30 days so can leave penalty free if I wish. Just annoying that it was fine on the old router.

Here's my stats from router. Screenshot_20190908_192243.jpg

@chappy5485 looking at your router you are only connected at just over 32Mps what was the minimum you were guaranteed and what speed were you getting with your old router

Re: My experience with the new Sky Broadband Hub

I have an existing bt openreach 5c socket on my wall and it's far away from a plug socket... can I ask engineer to move it or put another in? It's also in a room with bloody concrete or brick walls lol

That why I want better router.

Oh 1 last thing sorry kinda off topic but your all good people..

I found my old sky q hub router which i thought i had lost ( sky replaced for free bless them)

Can I use it as an access point using powerline adapter upstairs? (Disable dhcp etc etc)

Re: My experience with the new Sky Broadband Hub

@Laing1  minimum speed says 35, on old router via ethernet I was getting over mid 40s. Think I'll give them another ring tomorrow to weigh up options. don't really want to leave but I expected speeds to be similar.

@chappy5485 @im just curious what happens if change the router back to the Q hub that way we would be able to tell if it's the router or something else

@Tyl3r99 you can ask Sky to move your master socket they normally charge £65 but have been known to wave that - no router will give a good wifinsignal through masonary walls which is just down the physices of radiowaves.

@tarbat sorry to mislead you but have checked with Sky and there is only one version of the new Broadband Hub which will work on ADSL, VDSL and g.Fast using the two left most connecters and FTTP using the WAN ethernet port  as and when Sky get round to introducing that.  Not sure if the hub will need different firmware for FTTP Sky confirmed the introduction of FTTP is not imminent. There is rumour that review samples of the hub have been sent to the tech sites..

I think the reference to two versions black and grey in the ISP Review report is a mistake. Suspect the black and grey refers to the 2 connection cables which come with the kit.

Only the grey dsl cable was in the box for me.

See my pic above.

As I said, the instructions in the box were only for Sky FFTC connections, which I have (no mention of g-fast/FTTP).

Not the confusing ones online in a few places and were linked in the emails we had upon ordering, showing different ways to connect and not making it as clear as it should be..

@lettice suspect the hubs are packaged differently according to product my hub came with 2 cables and SOEGA instructions. FTTP not on sale even on customer trials as far as I know so unlikely to see any info on the packaging.

For those that want to know, the WAN port is active.

Easy to test using an ethernet cable back to itself on another port 🙂

@lettice Useful find. i wonder what would happen if you connected the new Sky hub to a Virgin Media hub in Modem mode?

You can tweak any router to get modem mode really just disable dhcp and change the gateway to something else like 192.168.1.2

That's not true modem mode, you end up with double NAT, for example.
