Re: How is the new F1 season going so far, any issues?

As I still have not had the call back form a manager that was promised over 48hrs ago, can we expect any kind of official response post in this discussion outlining what issues we can expect this weekend. And some sort of update as to how long this will last.
would also be good if Mark could at least confirm it is indeed a technical issue rather than a license which which I find extremely hard to believe

Re: How is the new F1 season going so far, any issues?

So I've had a call from Sky in response to an email I sent on Monday complaining about the delay in F1 recordings appearing in my planner.

Their explanation (don't shoot the meesenger) is that it's a licensing issue, and they cannot guarantee that it will be possible to record any sports events even future F1 races.

I asked why there was a difference in the time it took for P1 and P2 to appear compared with P3, Qualy and the race, and they again claimed it is a licensing issue and it all depends on how long it takes the licence holder to make the broadcast available.

As a good will gesture they will refund me one month's Sky Sports sub. They made very clear that this is a one-time offer.

I'm well out of my 31 day return period but I think I'm just going to pack it in and go back to Q. I'll see how the next couple of races go.

Thanks, IF that is indeed the case, it's a mis sold product..

Not shooting the messenger but that puts us right back to square 1 as to what exactly the issue is.
We need an official statement from sky explaining the situation once and for all

If it was a licensing issue I would expect ALL sky customers including Sky+ and Sky Q not be able to record live sport.

Re: How is the new F1 season going so far, any issues?

Mark,

Are we going to see an official response from Sky regarding this or are we going to have to keep on trying to figure out which of the many responses we can see on this thread to believe?

Thanks in advance.

Sky+ and Sky Q subscribers are recording from 'over-the-air' broadcast though: Glass isn't really 'recording' at all.

It's also worth remembering that when Sky was negotiating their exclusive F1 deal with Bernie Ecclestone, Glass wasn't a thing (and this also predated the Liberty Media takeover of the sport) which may complicate the situation now.

Re: How is the new F1 season going so far, any issues?

I am very confused, we still don't have any form of statement from Sky about this on-going fiasco of F1 coverage so we have to try to go off what different viewers have reported about their conversations with Sky employees.

It’s a bit like, yeah but, no but, yeah but, no but…

It’s a licensing issue; no it’s not a licensing issue it’s a technical issue getting the stream ready for broadcast; it’s up to the licence holder to prepare and upload the stream; no it’s just a temporary technical issue with the servers this weekend, it should be sorted by next weekend….. etc, etc……..

We never get a straight answer, you get the impression that you could speak to someone in customer services, viewer relations, technical support and a manager and get a different ‘story’ from each of them, false promises about what MAY happen, but never WHEN and mostly blaming some third-party rather than take responsibility.

Sky seems to thrive on a lack of factual data, misinformation and obfuscation.

I currently feel that the only partially safe way to watch practice sessions, qualifying, the pre and post race coverage and the actual race is to try to watch it all live, especially if I want to watch in UHD which I am paying an extra £5pm for on top of the £25pm Sky Sports subscription.

I’ve just checked the TV schedules for the next two races, Saudi Arabia and Australia.

Trying to watch the Saudi Arabia qualifying and race live would be difficult, it coincides with when we would normally have dinner etc in our household, but not impossible, just inconvenient, however, there is no chance I would be able to watch the Australian GP,  P1, P2, P3, qualifying and the race all entirely live, the race is at 06:00, so I will have to try crashing in to the race part way through using watch from start IF it is available and IF I can do so without learning what has happened so far and where the cars are on the track which based on viewers reports of last weeks coverage so far is not an easy task.

If I can’t watch from start for whatever reason then ideally I’d watch it on Sunday afternoon, but again, based on current reports it may not be available to watch until sometime on Monday, I have family commitments every Monday & Tuesday so realistically it would be Wednesday before I’d get an opportunity to watch it, what are the chances that I can get through three days without learning the results, even if I made a conscious effort to avoid any news items, social media etc…

There have been a number of users on this thread reporting how exasperated they are with this entire situation, lack of responsibility and comment and clarity from Sky and saying that they have given up and are either reverting to Sky Q and other providers or just relying on highlights on Channel 4, I can understand why and I suspect that the longer Sky continue to ignore us the more people will join them.

If I had known in advance that I should not expect live sports events to be available shortly after an event had finished so that I could watch it on the same day I would not have considered Glass as a viable option for watching F1.

As many users had said, come on Sky, give us a clear and factual statement about how and when you expect to deliver a service which is fit-for-purpose!

I see that @Mark-Br has given advance notice that he will lock this thread on the morning of Friday 25th March and I understand the reasons why, this thread has had a lot of views and comments and will have provided a great deal of feedback to Glass users, F1 fans and Sky themselves, if it stayed open the thread would become too long and difficult to navigate.

I intend therefore to start a new thread on Friday titled something like - Saudi Arabia GP - March 2022 - any issues to report? Hopefully we can the continue to report on-going issues and keep the pressure on Sky to do something about it, please don’t just give in and accept it, let Sky know where the service needs to improve and your thoughts about it…

Which would suggest to me that none of them have access to any definitive answers either.

@spudnik267

It wouldn't affect recording on the other platforms. They're talking about streaming which is what "recording" on Glass actually is. The rights are very different, and they seem to be the source of a great deal of the painful issues that Glass has.

Re: How is the new F1 season going so far, any issues?

We are not talking about cloud recording? This was the promise for SKY content. What's the difference, except that sky is hosting this as opposed to a disk in a Q box?

need clarity!

Re: How is the new F1 season going so far, any issues?

@joemit I doubt we will get a straight answer, as a statement would be an admission of liability.

I got my new Sky Q equipment today, pending the phonecall about the TV on Friday................A viewing card would have been nice 😂

Looks like I have to make another damn phonecall

No: the current understanding is that 'cloud recording' applies only to non-Sky content where there's no other on-demand / catch-up provision available or planned / in progress.

Frankly we all made assumptions about 'cloud recording' in advance of the Glass launch which haven't turned out to be correct.
