You cannot cancel a service by cancelling the DD.
You have to call Sky and give notice to cancel.

Re: direct debit
You've gone about this in totally the wrong way. Cancelling the direct debit is definitely not recommended. Doing that is going to cause you additional problems. Your services will be restricted, you won't be able to call Sky, you wont be able to cancel in the correct way, late payment fees will be added and eventually Sky will involve a debt recovery company which may affect your credit rating
Reset your payment method then the below link explains how to switch to an alternative provider or the various methods on cancelling completely.

If you cancel before your contract ends (minimum term), you might have to pay an early termination charge (Sky will notify you if you do and how much they’ll charge).
NOTE: One Touch Switching only applies to broadband and Talk and not a TV subscription.
Return packaging for any equipment Sky expect back will be sent out to you near the end of the 14 day notice period. Remember to keep any proof of posting indefinitely.
NOTE: I only provide help on the forum boards so Direct Messaging is switched off

Re: direct debit
You need to give Sky 14 days notice to cancel your broadband and unless you reinstate the direct debit you might not be able to contact them.

If you need help please provide as much information as you can

That won't stop your monthly Sky bill, which Sky will seek to recover, if you don't pay.
