Why do I have to continue to pay for Sky HD when SD has now been switched off ?

Depends on what channels you are referring to.

 

Sky still broadcast SD.  (Free to Air channels are broadcast in HD and don't require the add on)

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

SD hasn't been switched off as there are plenty of channels that only broadcast in SD no matter if you watch these or not but there are still there !

You may be misinterpreting the end of SD reception on obsolete (pre-HD) Sky+ boxes because they cannot decode the more recent broadcast encoding (technically it's a move from DVB-S to DVB-S2)

SD satellite broadcast is very much alive: millions of Sky+ HD and Sky Q households don't pay the HD subscription supplement and so require SD transmission to continue.
