Return of Sky broadband box over 10 years old is this necessary?

I have recently moved broadband provider having been with Sky for over 10 years. I have been asked to return the equipment or I will be charged. I query if an internet box over 10 years old needs to be returned as this ws damaged upon removal by the new internet provider and as such I had put this in the bin. I don't want to be charged for this but cannot understand the value in returning an old broken piece of equipment. Plese advise.

@Donny2 Yes it's necessary to return it, Sky have a responsibility to recycle old equipment (as do most if not all providers), the fact it's broken due the actions of another provider is irrelevant, as you have disposed of it you may well be charged by Sky for it.

Depends on the exact item but expect a non-return charge of around £50.

Of course, you can call Sky and see if they will waive it.  (But it's a contractual requirement to return it)

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

@Donny2

A 2013 Sky Hub shouldn't need to be returned, and it appears Sky no longer wants 2016 Q Hubs back either.  2019 Sky Broadband Hubs and 2023 Max Hubs are definitely returnable.

It's possible that Sky has an incorrect record of the equipment you've been using.

Putting electronics "in the bin" and therefore quite likely landfill is irresponsible. They are supposed to get recycled.

Also a mystery how the installer from the new ISP managed to damage a router, they are pretty robust boxes.
