Read the Sky Direct Debit Mandate
If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit, by SSSL or your Bank or Building Society, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your Bank or Building Society If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when SSSL asks you to.
so why are Sky delaying payments by paying refunds by cheque that take over 30 days

A Sky error after cancellation
Sky say they had a system ierror which held my account in pending not cancelled.
I received all the cancellation emails and sms
i was asked to keep my direct debit open for the final payment to be taken
1 year on I found Sky were still taking monies
I recommend you always cancel a direct debit and let sky ask for payment

I would not recommend that in general.
It puts you in breach of contract.

Cancelling Direct Debits - what merchants need to know
1. Customers can cancel a Direct Debit at any time. Your customer can cancel a direct Debit at any time, either by informing you directly or through their bank. If a customer asks you to cancel a mandate, make sure they also notify their bank.
Seems it's fine?

While a dd can be cancelled, this may result in failure to meet contractual obligations on the contract between you and sky.
If any amount on a contract between you and sky is owing, sky can then refer this to debt collection and with debt collection, amounts balloon with interest, sheriff fees etc.
If you are receiving services from any provider and paying on a dd mandate, and wish to cancel, you need to follow proper procedures with the providers.
Otherwise dealing with debt collectors is just a real big pain.

Yup, absolutely. You just need to set up an alternative continuous payment method...
