DIscarded equipment - now being asked to return

I moved house three weeks ago, and changed my Sky package. At the time I was not asked to return the equipment, and read that I would have been asked for it if they wanted it back. So last week I threw it in the tip, as I didn't need it and Sky hadn't asked for me to return it. 

 

Cut to today, and I've just got a message asking me to return it or face a £53 charge. I obviously can't return it, and I'm quite annoyed that Sky have taken this long to request it. I don't think it's fair that I'll be charged. Online chat is useless. Can anybody help me navigate this with a real person?

@Bobby156 probably best to call.

 

However, while you weren't advise at the time of the need to return equipment loaned to you, it is a contractual requirement which you agreed to.
