If your bill hadn't been paid then they can and will do this as you have found regardless of your circumstances. Nice you pay what you owe and setup your payment again then your services will be restored.

Yes. Your service is automatically restricted if your bill isn't paid on time. To reinstate your service you would need to pay the outstanding amount (there may be a late payment charge) and re setup your direct debit.

@Judith151 Telling them you are having difficulty paying unfortunately doesn't prevent restrictions , the billing system is fully automated and cannot be overridden by call centre agents

Yes, because it's use of the Sky hardware which is suspended. That those channels are themselves free-to-air is irrelevant.
