Call offering discount and a new iPad

Had a call from a Chinese woman from a mobile claiming to work for SKY and was offering to reduce my monthly premium to £25 and a free iPad. This was followed by a professional looking SKY email entitled Sky Promotions, quickly followed by another email entitled Sky Giveaways. Her colleague, also Chinese, then phoned me back from a Hartlepool number (  a dead number when I rang it back ) to "run through the details and arrange delivery by Dpd". They then asked me to open the SKY App and navigated me through to the stage when I had to give my bank details for the £12 courier charge. At this time I told them I thought they were a scam and hung up. I have since had 9 other calls from them - on 8 different mobile numbers - which I would be happy to give to the police.  Please be aware of these scame !

One of the first red flags is mention of a free iPad! Sky would soon be in financial hardship with such an offer.

They try to obtain sufficient information to be able to order expensive mobile devices under your name which Sky innocently deliver to you.

The scammers would then recontact you (again claiming to be Sky) saying they have made a mistake and for you to send it to a (non Sky) address. If you did that they then have the device and you have the bill.

They are very cunning. They may send packaging to post the item (to them) or might even send a 'courier' to collect it.

With any calls from 'Sky' (especially unexpected calls) if the caller asks for your previously agreed telephone password to confirm you're the account holder (which I would expect a genuine Sky agent to do) initially give an INCORRECT one on purpose. If the caller doesn't challenge it then you know it'll be a scam call.

This is a new approach.

Previously they tried to extract the account password and then ordered the (expensive) devices themselves.

Now, they are getting the customer to order the device from their own account promising it will be 'free'.

Both outcomes then involve the scammers collecting the ordered devices and disappearing with the customer facing the bill...

For context the cheapest iPad in the 2026 lineup is around £329 which is rather more than the profit Sky could hope to make on a minimum contract term even before such a generous monthly discount.

Re: Call offering discount and a new iPad

Hi all

Just to report another attempt under this "free iPad" scam today - 18/02/2026. It's very elaborate, they appear to have picked up or intercepted a message sent to sky to amend some account details or it may have been pure chance - they called moments after I sent a chaser to an unanswered message to Sky, which I'm told by Sky should have been answered within 24 hours - my unanswered message was originally sent on 10th Feb! They offered £50 per month, free iPad etc - what gives it away is trying to make you pay a refundable deposit for the iPad.

I have phone numbers - they appear to eminate from Torquay.

What is really alarming, is after some difficulty finding a telephone number for Sky and trying to speak to someone, I was effectively fobbed off - no interest, no details taken he suggested I speak to the police get a crime report number and then get back to them and the fraud people will speak to me!!

What is going on? Are they covering this up? If you do a google search it comes up as a scam and appears to have been going on for some time. It's a little worrying that Sky have not highlighted this or warnedtheir customers - have they suffered a major Hack that they are keeping quiet about?

Love to hear if any other have had similar experiences.

@SK41  By ypur logic all scams that are going around must be as a result of some kind of hacking?

Scammers will try and use the most popular companies to dupe people, if there had been data breaches Sky would have had to report it otherwise the ICO would be levying massive fines.

I think your putting 2 & 2 together and making 6,

...but I guess an email advising customers of the campaign would be helpful.

Re: Call offering discount and a new iPad

I'm merely raising the question.

My real concern was that when I spoke to someone from SKY I was fobbed off! The person had absolutely no interest in what I was trying to report or alert them to!!

Re: Call offering discount and a new iPad

Great point! Exactly what I thought an email to all customers highlighting the potential scam, or even inluding theat link, which I had found, would surely be very helpful and also good customer service. Something like that does not take a lot of time and effort but does show a caring attitude.

Cheers

@SK41

And those links in a convincing email are just one of the types of scam we're talking about.

Re: Call offering discount and a new iPad

I got this today.  It started with "is your device working properly?".  Well, no, I have a complaint open, so I assumed this was their follow up.  They offered me a money off discount, to send an engineer to fix it in person (for a mobile phone?), a replacement SIM and phone (I'm on a sim only plan).   They transferred me to technical support for a "fix".

Then came the "we have so many complaints right now, we are giving away free gifts, a tablet. or ipad".   No cost to you.  But there was mention that I paid for the shipping and they refunded me but there was no monthly cost.   They gave me a number to call to touch base with them on ending *947.

There was no request for my security details or sky phone password.  Basically, a free tablet is not a reasonable recompense from sky - too good to be true!  I then doubted they were from Sky.  There was too much talking at me from their end.  Just non stop  waffle.

You should never ever engage with them, they'll have you down as a possible mark now so be careful of what you click on if receiving emails (in fact, just don't click on anything).

Re: Call offering discount and a new iPad

My wife just got this call, now being inundated with calls from different phone numbers trying to reach her and even a follow up email which looks like it comes from Sky.   As always, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is....

@adbrad  100% scam calls, Sky would never offer a high priced item for free, I presume your wife gave then no account details?
