Martin Lewis (MSE) says that Sky broadband contracts, still inside the minimum term, can be cancelled without penalty fees if done within 30 days of a price increase announcement. Does anyone know if this is true? I've read my Sky contract and it isn't clearly stated.

@DIW - Yes, that is true and has been for a while since Ofcom introduced the rule that price rises must be detailed in exact monetary terms at the start of a contract. In situations where this doesn't occur ( which is for Sky contracts that don't have the price increase pre-baked into the contracts), the rule states that within 30 days of being notified of the price increase, a customer can leave without penalty.

This was part of OFCOM's efforts to make things clearer for customers, but unfortunately it hasn't necessarily had that effect, and on the whole it has led to higher price rises than under the old rule, as companies are guessing what there cost based will need to be in 2 years' time, when a contract is taken out. Bizarrely, it makes Sky's process, which is fairly unqiue amognst the bigger ISPs, a slight improvement on the others, as Sky don't have to guess what the price rise would need to be ( which on occassion has led for slightly cheaper price rises than some competitors) and also with the 30 days no penalty clause it gives the customers more freedom over whether they are happy with the increase or have found a cheaper deal elsewhere that they can switch to.

Re: Cancelling broadband contract after price rise April 2026

Thank you, that's good to know but I've never had a price increase letter from Sky. I can see the increase in the 'future payments' on the app. I'll look out for it in my junk folder!

@DIW

Sky send the emails / letters out in stages, probably so that the call centres aren't swamped with customers calling with queries all at the same time. Last year mine arrived on the 8th March.

Sky are a bunch of thieves

Been a premium Sky customer for 24 years, and have today cancelled my service due to the latest round of relentless above-inflation price hikes. (Taking the absolute **bleep** out of their customers).

The final insult being that they immediately cancelled my access to Sky Go and Sky Q-Mini box despite the fact that I continue paying for Sky Multiscreen for another 31 days. Sky are an absolute disgrace and I will never return.

Re: Sky are a bunch of thieves

Blimey that's terrible after being a loyal customer so long. I'm in the same boat as you, will be cancelling after 21 years. The price hikes are bad enough but in December they sent me the wrong mobile handset that I ordered and it's taken them 9 weeks to investigate and admit their error, I had to pay the bills and just wait for them to investigate, spent hours on the phone and not even a sorry.

Terroble Sky, I also will never return or give them a penny.

Just looked back at my previous bills, and my prices for all my services have gone up by 8.87 a month since 2024, which isn't unreasonable.

It's without doubt that negotiating a new price has become more difficult. But most recently I managed to get my broadband down and a speed increase, sometimes it really depends on who you get through too.

Haven't received an email as of yet.....  I'm really happy with my Sky Services, so not prepared to walk away just yet.

Price hike with option thats great I've been waiting for this opportunity to get out after 12 months. Lip sync and picture issues never resolved and can't use UHD as a result. Emailed my cancellation and reply says I have to ring them to clear security, Nonsense I clear security everytime  I log into my account why can't I do it from there! ..... oh of course they want to try and persuade me not to go! well they should have fixed our issues. Checked VM plans I can get the same deal with bigger BB for 60% of the cost. I will be making that call

@BC1956 You need to call, and give notice. They may present an offer, they may not.

It's frustrating, I get that, but at least you have the option to walk away. I was with Virgin Media prior to joining Sky in 2016 and it's much the same with them too.

if you can secure a better price and you're happy, go for it. Personally for TV I've never looked back when I moved to Sky.

That's correct. Sky can't verify your identity from an email.

@Yoghurt There's no doubt it's not as easy to get prices that remain the same, but usually after some back and forth, I've usually got a price I'm happy with. I'd rather stay with Sky if I'm honest.

Im still on SkyQ, which I desperately want to hold on too as long as I can, I'm all for progress and latest tech, but I'm happy as I am for the time being 😂
