I just wondered was there anyone else here in a similar situation in Ireland and if they had been told anything

I think if Ireland had dropped off the internet, the world would have noticed.

Any individual address can suffer an outage: thousand do nationally every day.

Well it's an engineer visit

5 working days

They thought that had fixed the outage in the area but me ringing told them they hadn't

I'm seeing a lot of sky broadband complaints on Twitter lately

@Trevortcb you will find loads of people moaning about all isps as the winter weather causes line issues it happens every year. Sky are one of the largest ISP hence more moans. Copper phone lines carrying high frequency electrical signals don't mix well  with very heavy rain and high winds.

I've noted elsewhere that when you supply six million households with a service a 99.99% success rate is still 600 unhappy ones logging new faults every day.

As @Chrisee indicates, legacy copper 'phone' cabling is rather less than 'four-nines' reliable (52 minutes of down-time a year).
