Why do sky cut scenes out of programs and movies?

Hello Sky Customers,

I have a question to ask sky team or anyone out there who can answer this question?

Why? Is it that scenes are cut from Entertainment & films on sky network.

Case in point. The last of us, on the IMDB Season 1/2. The running times for each episode is longer than the ones that are on nowtv.

Why, cut the program & the same for movies on there, most are cut by a couple of minutes.

Can someone please explain that too me?

Many Thanks

Chances are you're looking at IMDB figures for run times as shown in the USA on their slightly different frame rate (24fps vs 25fps, or about 4% slower than in the UK)

Famously, 'Gone With The Wind' is something like ten minutes shorter than the original cinema release cut when shown on UK television because that's the effect of the fractional speed-up in playback over the duration of such an epic, which has led to the persistent myth there are scenes which have been removed for broadcast (although it may well be lightly sound-edited for 'outdated language')

Sky Glass 55" (on ethernet) & two Stream Pucks (one ethernet / one WiFi)
BT Halo 3+ Ultrafast FTTP (500Mbs), BT Smart Hub 2

@Loco+Dawg

Yes, it's all to do with the fact that most movies and some American TV shows are shot at 24 frames per second. In the UK (and some other overseas territories) the broadcast frame rate is 25 frames per second, so all this content is simply sped up, therefore creating a shorter run-time when compared to the original source. You're not missing out on anything, you're seeing the same content at a slightly faster speed.

All movies shown on free to air TV (BBC, ITV, Ch4, etc) and on Sky Cinema are sped up in this way. If you want the native frame rate and native speed you need instead to stream them from an app which supports native frame rates. Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and Apple TV all stream movies and TV shows at their native frame rates without speeding anything up.

Yes nothing is cut it's just the conversion in frame rate that makes programmes very slightly faster on UK TV, If a US programme was exactly 60 minutes it would run for about 57:30 in the UK.

Strictly speaking the audio (and particularly dialogue) probably isn't quite at the intended pitch ; )

Indeed. I can't stand it personally. It's part of the reason I ditched Sky Cinema and haven't bought movies from Sky Store for many years.

It's fine for the mass market though - most people are blissfully unaware that such a thing occurs. The slightly shorter run times can be a blessing for many people, particularly with more and more movies having native durations of close to three hours.

They adjust the pitch to compensate these days.
