Sky channels in French

Hello all, I'm wondering whether there is an upgrade available which would allow me to get one or two channels in French? I like France24 - which is in English - but it would be great to find something en en français. Merci.

I'm afraid not. It's up to the French channel owners whether or not they want to be represented on the Sky platform. I imagine it's probably not cost effective for them.

@LePetitNicolas  For any French Free to Air channels you'd be looking at a different satellie setup & receiver that can receive channels from 19e & 13E where there is a selection of French language channels.

Like you I'm a customer here, Sky Employees are clearly identified as such.

Tv5 Monde used to be available but stopped broadcasting on Sky a couple of years ago.

It still has a live stream at https://europe.tv5monde.com/en/live?timezone=Europe/London

Yes, tv5 was correct.

There was also a Spanish, German, and Portuguese channels available I the 700s

Unfortunately Brexit makes it more difficult for the channels as if they wanted to as they would need a uk broadcasting licensee as well as their home market.

@LePetitNicolas

As @nolte indicates, Sky in the UK can only list channels in its EPG which have a UK broadcast licence and so agree to be regulated under the terms of the Broadcasting Code.  A channel intended for reception in France may well not wish to meet this criteria: it's also worth noting that Sky is not a platform there

Record TV (Brazilian Portuguese) closed in January 2021.
TV5 Monde Europe (French) closed on 30 November 2018.

TVE (Spanish) closed in 2009.

DW-TV (German) closed in August 2009.

None of these closures were due to Brexit. Record TV was from Brazil and not Portugal so this was not an EU licensing issue.

@Anonymous

According to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/RecordTV_Internacional record tv broadcast in portugal, so you know they probably have some sort of license in the EU to allow them to broadcast in Portugal

The signal to the uk was turned off on the first working day in 2021.

But I never said any of those channels closed due to brexit, the point  i was trying to make was that it was a further obstacle for any channels wishing to broadcast in the UK

I'm sorry this was not 100% clear in my post.

Re: Sky channels in French

It's hard to believe Record TV's closure in the UK wasn't Brexit related, it ceased at 23:00 on 31st December 2020, the exact moment the transition period ended and the UK fully left the EU.
