SKY SCI-FI

Why has SKY SCI-FI gone down the pan. The channel rarely has any new programmes. Can we please get some much needed improvement on that channel please.

Re: SKY SCI-FI

I don't think the channel even has it's own sponsor

It's solely a 2nd run channel now, has been for 2 years, have previously repeated some HBO programming on it aswell before it expired.

I do now question why the channel still exists , when the series repeated are available On Demand under other Sky brand or even repeated on Sky Mix in the case of the various Star Trek series, it's also had 3 different channel numbers on Sky (Satellite) in past year , 152, 139 and then 145.

Sky just premiere Sci-Fi or Horror series on another channel, The Terror: Devil In Silver on Sky Atlantic on Sunday and Crystal Lake on Sky Atlantic in October, Station Eleven was also put on Sky Atlantic.

It's the same with Sky Mix. I don't think I've ever watched Sky Mix since its launch. My assumption is that it was meant to be a showcase channel for Freeview/Freely. The likes of Game of Thrones and The Last of Us would've been perfect for Sky Sci-Fi.

Re: SKY SCI-FI

Sky don't have the rights to broadcast Game Of Thrones anymore  , they made it available full on Sky Showcase last September on Virgin

It's surprising The Last Of Us hasn't repeated on Sky Sci-Fi (if the channel hasn't closed ) , to help them avoid breaking their own EPG rules

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programmes_broadcast_by_Sky_Sci-Fi#Second-run_programming

Sky Mix is currently showing Evil (also repeated on Sky Sci-Fi from 1st September) and The Walking Dead The One Who Lives from 31st August (has been repeated on Sky Sci-Fi before)

Realistically it's the streamers which are commissioning most new content, which only reaches broadcast channels long after release (if at all)

I think Sky could really benefit from launching streaming channels, like Sky Animation, where it would show classic Simpsons, Futurama (which Sky has rights to), or SNL UK & US snippets, or The Last of Us. Even as an app on Sky Q and normal channels on Sky Glass/Stream.

Sky could do SO much more, but they're so involved with buying ITV, which after 2034, is probably a dead market. Sky are completely falling behind. Even the streaming channels Sky do have are only on Sky Glass/Stream in the UK.

I would like a new set-top box where it could be like Sky Q Stream, where it's a mix of Sky Q and Sky Stream, where if the satellite is better quality, it would use the satellite frequency or the streaming if that's better. Also, this could reduce the likes of duplicate channels where the satellite version would show BBC One London, but when local news would be on, if not in London, it would automatically switch to local news. The same for adverts; the channel would show e.g. London ads as default, but ads would be streamed for other regions.

Freeview are already trying this with Great! TV (which is not the one on its EPG)

The only reason why people stay with Sky is for live sport and the reduction in cost to streaming services, or they may have a deal where they get TV, Broadband and Phone bundled together.

If one wants to watch only streaming services, it's really not worth getting Sky.

I'm on Sky Q in Ireland:

  • Sky Signature - €41 (non-promotional price €55)
  • Sky Cinema - €12 (non-promotional price €20)
  • Sky HD - €10
  • Netlfix - €10  Standard with Ads (Not incl. with any Sky Q subscription pack)
  • Disney+ - €0 - Standard with Ads with Sky Signature
  • Paramount+ - €0 - Basic (with Ads) with Sky Cinema
  • Discovery+ - €0 - Entertainment with Sky Signature
  • HBO Max - €0 - Basic with Ads with Sky Signature

  • Total: €73 (non-promotional price €95) per month.

To pay for the cheapest subscription tier with each respective service:

  • Netflix - €10.99 - Standard with Ads
  • Disney+ - €8.99 - Standard with Ads
  • Paramount+ - €5.99 - Basic (with Ads)
  • Discovery+ - €4.99 - Entertainment
  • HBO Max - €5.99 - Basic with Ads

  • Total €36.95 per month
  • The likes of RTÉ, Virgin Media, Channel 4 have free apps.

Ironically, Q could have done that a decade ago.

I'd suggest the very limited remaining lifespan of satellite television broadcasting to the UK & ROI makes it extremely unlikely there's going to be any more Sky satellite hardware.

That isn't why it has no new programmes , Sky are chosen not to put new programmes on it.

Weirdly Sky has never had Sky Entertainment channel starting with S that's lasted much more than 4 and half years (Sky Soap and Sky Showcase) and Sky Scottish (less than 2 years)

Sky Snowcase was basically like the old Sky One Mix, with Sky Max supposed to be the main Sky One.

I'm surprised that Sky still have rights to futurama.

Maybe it's me, but i can't remember the last time I saw it on the epg

They usually show "Welcome to Futurama" after a movie.

Sky hasn't aired it in about 3 years, which was Sky Showcase/Sky Comedy , so i don't think they have the rights anymore

, The Simpsons is paired with The Office US (Superstore from 1st September) on Sky One aswell.

That's what I was thinking, which is why I thought the claim that they still had the rights sounded incorrect.

Re: SKY SCI-FI

At the current rate , there will only be 1 series or TV movie that's actually Sky Sci-Fi branded by end of next year (series 2 of Reginald the Vampire)
