Why does the middle column for the game being played show 15, when the hole being played was 16?

@PamF13  Because it is the number of holes the game is thru (completed) not the hole they are on, so if it says 15 they have already played 15 holes and the hole they are currently playing is 16 when hole is completed it will change to thru 16 and they move on to 17

its how it's always shown on all golf courses and broadcasts

That is what I thought, but why does the background of the number change from black to yellow, when a player is playing a shot, as shown in the photo? It then changes back to black, until the next shot is played, when it again changes to yellow

@PamF13  The answer is simple when it turns yellow it's indicating the match you are watching, nothing else

Re: Query about information displayed during Ryder Cup 2025

I would be happy with that if the number of the previous hole was not highlighted at the same time, inferring that the golfers were on that hole. My concern is for those who do not understand, or know anything about, golf

Which does rather raise the question of why they'd be watching ; )

The current tournament frankly revels in its own particular bizarre rituals and deliberate obscurity...

Everyone knows nothing until they learn something. How else would golf continue to grow as a sport, if everything was made so obscure and confusing as to put them off?

Thank you for your explanations, and I quite agree with your analysis of the American rituals in this particular tournament

But they need to learn by using the correct golfing terminology, which this is.
