Jaws is 50 today

Today is the 50th anniversary of Jaws, which in turn makes it the 50th anniversary of the Summer blockbuster. This is based on the US release date; we had to wait 6 months until Boxing Day in the UK to see Spielberg's masterpiece.

Over the years, I have seen Jaws numerous times, beginning at the cinema on its original release, on VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, & then the cinema again recently, where I saw the new 3-D version. And now I can watch it in 4K for free on Amazon Prime ( as I'm a member ), along with the documentary, Jaws - The Inside Story ( also free ). Not sure if this is new or not, the Blu-ray extras have The Making of Jaws.

How to make us feel old.

Although titled as 4K UHD (& has the UHD icon) , I am not sure it is UHD  & even if it is I don't think it is HDR- just tried playing a few minutes and  I don't seem to be getting anything more than 1080 HD even though other titles in UHD go to UHD within a minute- I would be interested to know if you do get in 4K

I have the 45th anniversay edition on  UHD disc in HDR with Dolby Vision (& a remixed Atmos track) which is stunning .

As I haven't watched it for a while I must do so

As an aside I bought Lawrence of Arabia 4K version on Prime a couple of years ago when it was on offer for £2.99 & then it was 4K UHD/SDR (i.e. not HDR) - but when I tried playing it just now, to test I was getting 4K ok, I noticed it is now playing in HDR 🙂

Re: Jaws is 50 today

I did watch it yesterday on APV, had to be done. Whilst the PQ was very good, I'm not sure it was any better than my Blu-ray copy. Still a great film though, even after 50 years.

@Mr+Ripley @nigea99 I tried it last night and my TV showed it as playing at 1080p even though I pick the 4K UHD version. I tried another film from prime that also stated it was 4K UHD and that did indeed show on my TV as being 4K UHD

Well, now I'm in a quandary. I figured watching it on APV in what I thought was going to be 4K, would mean I would have seen Jaws in all formats available over the years. Now it seems that isn't the case. But, as I only watched it 2 days ago & also not that long ago in 3D at the cinema,  and I own the Blu-ray version, do I really want to spend £20 on the 4K physical disc? The Amazon reviews are very good, along with @nigea99's comments. What to do, what to do....🤔

Spotted this on Amazon's page for the 4K Jaws disc. Do you think I should tell them?

hi @Mr+Ripley

As much as I like it in 4K/HDR I am not sure it is worth the full price (particularly if you have other versions)

I picked mine up in late 2020 (didn't realise it was that longe ago) in a 3 for £36 deal at HMV

HMV do change their 4K deals from time time - they used to have quite a few in a 2 for £25 deal (which I got many of mine in ) but in recent months the main deal, which jaws 4K 45th is in, is 3 for £50 so not a great reduction.

@Mr+Ripley no harm in letting them know what we have found its 1080p rather than 4K UHD

Re: Jaws is 50 today

@nigea99 I think it's more of a completist thing with me, having seen Jaws in all those other formats & with only one left to do, I kind of want to see it. I can afford it, so maybe I should go ahead. I can always wait & watch it on the 51st anniversary. 🐋

Amazon always do this with movies they don't own. When they are shown as being available to stream on Prime Video, even if it states that it is available in UHD with HDR, it will only play in 1080P SDR for Prime members. You will only get the UHD HDR version if you choose to purchase or rent the movie on the Prime Video app.

Only movies which Amazon class as an 'Amazon Original' or ones they have invested in the production of, will play in UHD with HDR for Prime Video members. For all other movies, you need to actually pay extra to rent or purchase them in order to get the best quality.

I bought Jaws on iTunes years ago for £2.99 and it was upgraded (for free) to 4K Dolby Vision on my Apple TV 4K box. It looks fantastic and still has the very 70s film grain look.

Re: Jaws is 50 today

I have found Jaws on Apple TV+, and I already have a large library of films from them. It says it is 4K, Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos & it's only £7.99. I feel I can trust the description given, but does anyone know if this is actually in 4K?

It is a 4K source. Confirmed by the playback HUD in developer mode on the Apple TV 4K box.
It's also double the bit rate of the HD SDR file on Prime Video.

Re: Jaws is 50 today

If anyone's interested, there's a documentary called JAWS @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story on Nat Geo HD next Friday at 9.00 am & 8.00 pm. Not sure what it will have to say that hasn't already been on the DVD & Blu-ray extras, but at least it's new.

In addition to the above, it is also available to watch in 4K on Disney+ from tomorrow - 11th July.

I watched this on D+ this afternoon & what a brilliant documentary it is. It was great to see so many other well-known film directors talking about Jaws with such awe & fondness for it. Well worth watching.

As for my quandary about seeing Jaws in 4K, I solved that today. One month ago, I posted on this thread about it being £7.99 to buy from Apple TV+. Today I bought it from there for only £2.99. That is a great bargain for a classic film in 4K. So, if you want to add it to your 4K collection, you know where to go. Hurry, though, as it may be a limited-time offer.
